Remington 700 extraction problem

I recently purchased a new Remington 700 5R Mil-Spec in 308 Win.
Finished mounting the new scope and took it to the range to sight it in.
I fired 10 rounds of Federal Gold Medal Match168 Grain Sierra Matchking BTHP ammunition.
Every one of the 10 shells that I fired were extremely difficult to extract.
I tore a big chunk off my pinky finger where it banged against the scope while trying to extract the third round.
The rounds chamber and extract fine if not fired but once a cartridge is fired it jams in the chamber and is extremely difficult to extract the spent case.
I kept on thinking it would loosen up as I shot it but I finally gave up after 10 rounds.

Does anybody have any useful advice or input?

Welcome to THR, hdwilliamsjr.

Do you see any odd marks on the fired case that may indicate why the brass is sticking?
Have you cleaned the chamber to make sure that there is no debris stuck in it?

If you have a bore light, inspect the chamber for burrs and/or something irregular.

I cleaned the bore using a Dewey guide and rod between shots but i think that the guide slips inside the chamber and might have kept me from getting a good cleaning of the chamber. The fired brass has a visible belt toward the base of the shell that looks like it had expanded and printed the chamber markings on the brass. It's a slight visible marking but nothing extreme and I've seen similar markings on brass fired in other rifles that didn't result in stuck cartridges.
I'm going to scrub the chamber tomorrow and take it back out to the range on Monday with assorted ammo and see how it does before I call Remington.

This is the norm with a lot of rifles from a couple of batches of that rifle....SEND IT BACK TO REMINGTON!

IF you try, or have it repaired by anyone other than Remington or their affiliates, you will void your warranty.

Similar problem with Remington 700 rivetless extractor, but occasionally has a problem extracting fired cases. When it doesn't extract (after trying several times) there are numerous marks on the 8x57mm case rim I used a cleaning rod and kept shooting but it has happened a few times again and the extractor hook has brass residue packed in it. I will clean the chamber good as mentioned above and try again. The headspace is good. I too clean the barrel with a Dewey rod guide. Should I clean the brass from the extractor and reinstall, take it to a good gunsmith (Gordy Gritters is 50 miles away), or just put in a new extractor and forget it? I ask because the unreliability bothers me.

Ockhamsrifle, in your case, I would at least buy a new extractor and try it. The extractor is fairly cheap, and not that hard to install.

I don't think that it's the problem with the original OP's question though.

Kind of a long shot, but you should check your front scope base screws. I installed a pair once with the longer screw in the wrong hole and it impeded the cartridge from chambering.

You can remove the bolt, carefully insert your pinkie and feel for the screw protruding; you might even be able to see it.

If that is not it, I agree with the post above to send it back to Remington. They will make it right.

Please post a pic of the brass. Your description makes it sound like the rifle has excess headspace and is stretching the brass. If it were me I'd get the headspace checked before firing another round. See the pic below for why the brass would look like that. BSW

I posted these photos to show the bur in the chamber at the 9 O'clock position and the gouging it does to the case when extracted. The primers look to me like maybe there's an over pressure condition in the chamber. The belt marking around the base of the shell is more difficult to photograph and I wasn't able to get a picture that showed it as well as I can see it with the naked eye.

It's seems to me that you have two problems as you noted in previous posts.

The burr in the chamber would not be a problem to fix, but I would be concerned about the cratering in the primers.
It appears that the firing pin hole may be oversize in my opinion, and I would contact Remington about your issues.
Factory ammo should not be extruding back into the firing pin hole.
They might even want to see your pics.

Definitely send it back to Remington....as for the pin hole, we have been seeing an increase in firing pin hole size in not just the rifles from Remington, but some of the shotguns are scary big!

When I attended the Remington 700 factory armorer school, we had a guy with a 700p that had about 100rds through it fail the headspace test. In his gun the case was getting stuck in the chamber due to headspace allowing the case to swell. The remingron rep made a call and they replaced his rifle the next day. Just thought this might help.

I just got off the phone with Remington customer service / warranty repair representative and they are mailing me a shipping label so that I can send the rifle back to the repair center. I'm glad that they are so willing to help me in resolving this issue but at the same time I'm kind of bummed out that my new rifle is going to be gone for a while. I'll post again once I receive the repaired rifle and have a chance to shoot it again.

All the manufacturers are having 'problems' of some sort now days, it is sad, but with today's 'cut all the corners' mind set, it is happening.

Remington will, or should fix your problem, and don't flam Big Green to bad, slap them a little, but like I say, all the manufacturers are dropping turds now and again, Remington just seems to be doing more 'dropping' than the others right now. lol

I share your frustration!

I had the same problem this weekend with my new 700. I was shooting cheap ammo - 1 box of federal power shok, 1 box of Remington Core Lokt. First 7 shots of the federal failed to eject properly. When I looked closer the extraction hook was jammed in by brass residue.

I cleared out the jam and it ran good for the next 12-13 rounds.

then i switched boxes to the Core-Lokt and started the process all over again. About 7-8 rounds that didn't eject and the hook (AGAIN) jammed down with brass residue. Cleared it out a few times, and then it ran flawlessly for the rest of the box.

IDK if I finally got it fixed or what. I thought it may just be breaking in, I guess I will find out next time I head out.

Remington has been under fire recently, odds are, they will want to sweeten you up and send you a new one quickly, Make sure to mention the price of your rifle.. they will make it right.

The primers look about 'normal' to me. My rem 700 leaves similar marks just due to the size of the firing pin hole.

That chamber on the other hand...

When I spoke to the gentleman at the repair center he asked me how old the rifle was (in reference to the firing pin indents) and I told him it was brand new. He looked up date of manufacture using the serial number and said that they used to ream the firing pin holes but mine was manufactured after they stopped doing that.
Anyway, Remington received my rifle 10 days ago (UPS tracking said so) and I hadn't heard from them yet. I phoned today and got a repair tracking number but when I use that on the Remington site it only says "Item received and logged in"
Does anyone have a rough idea how long Remington takes to resolve problem guns?

I had to send my SPS back this summer and it was around 2 weeks from the day I shipped it to the day it arrived at my house.

Just received my "Repaired" rifle from Remington.
The repair document said:
M127 -Trigger pull is out of factory specs
the rifle was purchased new and I never touched the trigger so evidently it left the factory "out of factory spec"
M163 - Freebore miscut / Min
the gouge at the 9 O'clock position is still visible.

I haven't fired it yet so I can't comment to the effectiveness of the repair.

I'm really upset that they damaged the stock as badly as they did and then sent it back to me without repairing or replacing the stock.
I know it wasn't damaged in shipment because I bought a new foam padded hard case to ship it and received it in the same case. For it to be damaged like this there would be damage to the case.

I would be very upset that the rifle was damaged by them, and more so, if the repairs are not done properly.

Did you tag the gun with the faults when you sent it?

Call them and let them know that you are not happy with the damage that was done.

Hard to believe that they have let their QC slip so bad.

That's ridiculous, It's funny how remington is so popular, yet their customer service is among the worst.
And the worst thing is, I will probably own one in the future, due to so many tactical stocks made for the action..

Yes I wrote a description of the problems and included the 3 photos that I posted earlier in this thread.

I bought this gun brand new and have only fired 10 rounds through it before sending it in for repair. The stock was in perfect condition when I shipped it.

I'm most appalled by the ethics and integrity of the person who obviously dropped my rifle hard enough that they would have inspected it and noticed the damage and then chose not do anything about it.

It took 3 weeks from the time that repairs were completed until they shipped it.
That makes me wonder if they weren't trying to figure out how to repair it and then someone said "just ship it back and see if he says anything"

I purchased a new T/C Icon back in August that was doing something very similar. T/C had me send the rifle back and I received a brand new replacement rifle and a spare magazine 17 days later. Here is what my fired cases looked like:

I've been trying to call Remington customer service all day and keep getting a recorded message saying "we are unable to help you today because we are extremely busy. Try again some other time. Sorry if this is inconvenient for you...good-bye"....click
I called the repair center in Illion, NY who serviced / broke my rifle and listened to the automated directory which tells you to call the number for customer service and I just ignored the message and hit zero to speak with a person. She told me to call the customer service number, so I explained to her that "They are extremely busy and don't have time to talk with me today" so she transfered me to some guy named Tom and I got to speak with his answering machine.

Remington seems to address problems with their products and service the same way the French addressed the Germans...."Run and Hide...Pretend we're not here...maybe they'll go away"

Geeze...so frustrating.
