I don't believe that a good defensive rifle has to cost a small fortune. Here's what I put together (very basic) for just under $500.
Rifle: Saiga .223 $275 lightly used.
Forearm: Sure Fire / SGM Tactical $70.
Magazines: 5 Factory 10 Round Mags, used $50.
Light: Insight M3, $80.
Total Cost: $475.
This rifle is 100% reliable with the cheapest ammo available.
Is this my dream rifle? No way. Does it serve its purpose? Absolutely.

Since the theme seems to be Saiga, I'll post a pic of mine. I have an AR-15 magazine adapter on it so I stock but one kind of 5.56 magazine. Keeps things simple when you have a mix of both AK and AR type rifles.....and there is no way to grab the wrong magazine if one should be in a hurry.
The A2 is "low cost", around $800 invested. The M4'gery has some higher dollar stuff.

My $150ish Cdn., Plainfield M1 Carbine. Never had any issue with it a bath didn't fix.

I'm not sure whether I should post a picture of my M1 carbine, my SKS, or my KelTec sub2000
How about skipping the pictures and saying that all three together (with a bag-o-mags and stripper clips AND a reasonable stash of ammo) were under $1000.
I've probably burned up a few hundred bucks worth of ammo, of course ... but the baseline stash wasn't too bad.
