I am now 18 years of age and I will be headed off to college soon. My family has a firm belief in the right to bear arms and self protection. I am interested in the laws for an 18 year old to own a handgun in Idaho. I have taken several handgun training courses and plan on taking more to further advance my shooting and safety skills. My father is a responsible CCW permit holder here in Idaho, and he has instilled in me the safety and responsibility that comes with owning a weapon.

I would primarily be using the firearm for outdoor(hunting) defense, camping trips, home defense, and possibly the shooting sports at the local gun range.

Am I legally allowed to own a handgun? Am I able to receive a CCW permit, and if so, will the permit allow me to conceal carry a handgun in my vehicle? How can i store this handgun in my vehicle without a CCW permit? Or am i better off using a long gun as my primary vehicle defense weapon?

Thanks for your input!

Are you asking this of Idaho or when you come to college here in Louisiana? :)

Own a handgun, yes

carry one
Depends on where you live, some places you can OPEN carry under the law, but many places require that you be 21 to CCW

Federal law prohibits anyone under 21 from buying a handgun or handgun ammunition. You can usually own one if given to you and by a relative but its illegal to have a friend purchase one for you in a straw sale.

If you want to know the laws, Federal or State, go to NRA.org, click Legislation and Politics, then gun laws.

If you are interested in maintaining your firearm rights, join the NRA.

Only from an FFL. Federal law does not prohibit handgun sales to an 18-20 year old between two regular citizens. State laws and others still apply.

You can usually own one if given to you and by a relative but its illegal to have a friend purchase one for you in a straw sale.

True, state and local laws vary still, however.

Ive read over the Idaho Firearms regulations and was able to confirm that it is legal for me to buy a handgun from a private seller. Since i might not be able to get a CCW permit for a while, how can i carry a handgun in my truck?
