I wasn't sure where to post this, either here or legal. Mods if it needs to be moved my apologies.

Is it legal to conceal a fixed blade knife in Georgia? I have a ccw permit. The knife I've been carrying is a Ka-Bar TDI (under 3" blade), I wear it on my belt and my shirts hang over it. I was under the impression that I could carry it concealed as long as I had my permit but was told today that I could not conceal a knife even with the permit.

While seeking legal advice on this forum is not recommended (no lawyers to be found here far as I know), it's not prohibited either far as I know.

From what I understand of the modern GA law, it should be legal:
(2) "Knife" means a cutting instrument designed for the purpose of offense and defense consisting of a blade that is greater than five inches in length which is fastened to a handle.
(3) "License holder" means a person who holds a valid weapons carry license.
(5) "Weapon" means a knife or handgun.
(6) "Weapons carry license" or "license" means a license issued pursuant to Code Section 16-11-129.

A long time ago it was illegal to conceal any "knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense" without any further description of the knife and many website still quote that outdated text.

I'd recommended looking the most recent law up on http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/gacode/Default.asp
See 16-11-125.1 (quoted above) and related.

Take a look at GeorgiaPacking.org (http://www.georgiapacking.org/law.php)

To carry a knife designed for offense with a blade over 5 inches you must have a Georgia Weapons Carry License (or the older Georgia Firearm License) issued under code 16-11-129. There are exceptions, read below to find out what those are.

Also please be aware that knives are often regulated by locals so be careful with carrying a knife (knives with a blade 5 inches or longer and designed for offense and defense are preempted by state law).

RS14 I checked Georgia Packing before, as well as several other carry sites I can find no clarification if it is legal to conceal or not.

When in doubt, write a LETTER to the state AG for clarification.
