Yes I know they can get way out of hand and do great damage. That said if we could just get a few more folks to focus on something other than horns we might keep the hogs under control......

Brother in law shot this one on Friday evening. The first picture is about sunrise on Sunday. You can figure out the rest.....and yes it was that good.

C'mon.. Most landowners complaining about it, are thinking more about their wallets than keeping em under control.

And yes, I too, have paid to hunt them.
They are fun to hunt and (some) are easy on the palate.

Looks good!

The landowners that complain the loudest about the hogs are the root of the control problem. They won't open their land to hunting but will complain about the hogs being out of control.

people who pay to hunt feral hogs= pigs being good for monetary gain.

"course if they've been fed on corn and not just whatever they root up, they taste really good, too.

You should try them when they've been eating oranges out of the orange groves. They basically marinate themselves for you.

The wild boar was exterminated in England in the 13th century (well before the 300wsm was available) so intensive hunting should work.
They now have wild boar again because of the release of caged ones by animal rights activists.

dont eat 99.9% of em, only make em buzzard food or coyote bait. ever once in a while a 40-50 pounder for ham & backstrap....got way too many to worry bout cleaning etc. I usually kill one or two every time I go in the cattle pastures.

Around here we usually take a roofing blow torch to the hog to burn the hair off then scrub it real good with a very stiff bristle brush to clean it off.

I'd imagine they did something similiar.

Brother in law head shot this one with the intention of us doing it with the skin on..........but as he left me to deal with it ( he's smarter than I am! ) and did not say anything I just skinned it.

Used a rub with a good bit of salt and spice in it. Put that on the night before.

One of the guys at the feast was is a chef, owns his own restaurant ( A good one! ) and he had suggested that if I did not want to brine it that the night before rub with a lot of salt would help hold the moisture in. Hog was very lean ( they usually are this early in the season) so I expected it to dry out but what he suggested worked.

FL, I'd love to watch and learn...from a safe distance!

But seriously, I have done the boiling water and scraping the hair off method and used a pressure washer to blast the hair off too but found it more trouble than I felt it was worth. We just skin them these days. Does your scorching method leave any remote taste of that burnt hair smell? How much and what do you recomend drinking to get over the smell while you are scorching one?

That smell would ruin me of eating chicken for a month. As for wild hogs, I just skin the ones I keep.

You guys are so lucky to have pigs to hunt. I do feel bad for the farmers when their crops get destryed, but I would love to hunt them.

somebody needs to kill a bunch of hogs and put em where them muslims wantto build that mosque,, supposedly that will ruin that property according to their beliefs...problem solved...no mosque in NY or anywhere in Amerika.

Sorry it took me so long to reply...Second phase of deer season of started.

The boiling and scraping is WAY too much work. Burning off the hair is so much easier and faster. Yeah it stinks but considering you just field dressed a wild hog there isn't too much out there that smells worse. If the smell gets to you just rub a little Vicks under your nose and get busy. You just pass it over the hog quickly. The goal is to burn the hair off and not burn the skin which is why the roofing tar defuser is really handy.

As long as you scrub it with a good stiff brush and some liquid soap and rinse it well there won't be any taste.

After that they get spiced up and thrown in the Chinese box to cook all day. And if you cook them like that you want the skin on them or it will dry out and be like eating shoe leather. My general rule with hog is if you're cooking it fast, like a tenderloin, take the skin off. If you're cooking it slow, like you would a whole pig or a shoulder, leave the skin on.

I've done the whole "skin them in strips" thing and it sucks.
