I've been looking at Norinco and Stoeger coach guns recently but haven't heard the great things about Stoeger. I'd like to keep it under $500 so no CZ's. Does anyone know of better companies or a good bang for your buck weapon? Thanks.

Nope. The CZ is a nice shotgun.

I've got one of the chinese made ones. Haven't fired it much, but it seems to hold a decent pattern with Sellier & Bellot . Only problem is it's stiff to open after firing

cost me 230$, can be ordered from centerfiresystems.com, got mine from Big 5.

Have you held one? I thought I'd love a coach gun but it is HEAVY!

Well, FWIW I have a Stoeger. It's the Silverado with the matte nickle finish and it's been nothing short of excellent. Fit, finish, and most importantly function have been all that I could ever want. Before you completely rule them out, play with one at the store and see what you think. Mine was the tiniest bit rough on opening because of the rough nickle finish. But about 30 cycles of open/close to polish the hinge surfaces and now the bbls will drop down from gravity when I hit the lever. Good luck with your search.....

It would be this one. For $425 OTD.......

Remington SPR 220 can still be had for under $500.00 I think. Mine has screw in chokes. I have the lightest choke on the right barrel & the full on the left. I Pheasant & Quail hunt with dogs. So im usually on top of the bird or birds. Around 10 yrds give or take. The light choke leaves me a better less damaged bird to eat IMO. & on the occasion 2 or more take flight. The full choke will reach out there. It is an easy shotgun to hit doubles with out in the field. & it easily doubles as a Home defense weapon.

Remington dropped their Russian breaktops a couple years ago.
EAA supposed regained the import rights & shows them on a sister company website, but unknown if they're actually bringing any in.
They told me earlie this year they wouldn't because the Russians were hiking prices by 30%.

Stoegers are serviceable, frequently stiff, even in blued versions.

Chinese coachguns are iffy.

Denis.

The Baikals are becoming almost a cult gun. If you google them you'll find nothing but questions about where to find them, the current import status, etc.

Well apparently I was dead wrong with Stoeger. That's good to know too since I've always liked the look as well as the price. Thanks for the help guys!

BTW those Baikals look appealing but there's not not too much info on the manufacturer. Kinda makes me hesitant.

Baikal shotguns are made by Izhevsk Mechanical Works (Izhmash), founded in 1807. They've built everything from muskets to AK's for the Russian military. The shotguns are rugged, but hard to find now since nobody is importing them.

There's a thread in Rifle Country that says EAA is going to be importing Baikals again, but nothing about a timeframe that I saw.
Food for thought, anyway.

I carry my Baikal as a bear defense gun, something to be taken very seriously in my zip code. It fits in my pack with the butt hanging over my shoulder. It's also my home defense gun. They are tough little guns.

...........Baikal/Remington Spartan line. Built like tanks and the changeable chokes make them very versatile. The chokes help me reach out there as well as my 30 inch Western Arms (Ithaca), well almost as well. Good enough to bust clays. I have the exposed hammer version so I can keep a couple shells in the tube without worrying about the firing pins being cocked. Also had a limbsaver put on it. Those little coaches are light and can have quite a kick! And I'm not recoil shy. Also had sling swivels installed for wood stomping carry. They're not bad on the eye either. My next upgrade when I can afford to do it is having my safety made selective so it's on when I want. Not automatic every time you bust open the breach. KodiakBeer, where did you get that leather butt cuff? That's a nice one!

I got the butt cuff in a gun store in Izhevsk, Russia.

Consider the Cimarron TTN with rabbit-ears, it's a popular choice for cowboy action shooters who shoot thousands of light rounds thru them. Mine is very easy to open all the way, has no issues with reliability or accuracy, and is heavy enough to "soak up perceived recoil."
No safety gadgets needed thanks to real working hammers. Around $400 or so.

The Stoegers are even more popular for CAS, because without the rabbit ears it's faster to fire the 3rd and subsequent shots in the speed game; but many seem to need gunsmith action jobs.

I guess I won't be getting one of those anytime soon. Though my wife does leather work and winter is coming. We can make one. Might give me more appreciation of it. Guess we'll have to go to the local Tandy Leather store. Sounds like an interesting story on your part.

In the same store, I also bought a shoulder rig for a 1911. I saw the various shoulder rigs and thought it stupid to ask if they had one for a 1911, but when I got my meaning across, it was all : "Colt? Da!" A beautifully made old school leather rig for about $15.
