Beretta 96 Failure to Feed
Spec ops Grunt

My Grandpa is having a problem with his Beretta 96. The cases seem to get caught on the feed ramp, this seems to happen with both magazines.
It kinda looks like where the bullet tapers off is where the ramp catches it, are there any round "ball" style 40 S&W rounds?
We were shooting plain jane Federal rounds, brass cased, fmj.
It's an old police gun, rifling is fine, but it hasn't been cleaned by us yet. Going to do that and hope it solves the problem.'

The only issues I've had with my 92 were after extended periods of no cleaning. Give it a quick detail and all should be fine.

The feed ramp is almost straight across in a 96. If the magazine is inserted all the way in, the slide should take it from the magazine into the chamber. If there's a burr on the chamber, it may catch on the rim. The solution may be as easy as changing ammo to taking a Dremel polishing wheel and shining up the ramp-to-chamber area. (If there's a burr there, gramps should be able to feel it with his finger and just chip it away with a small jeweler's file.)
Please let me know if this is the cause and if it helps.

About 6 or 7 years ago I had a brand new Inox 96 that suffered the exact same problem. About 2 hangs every 500 or so rounds. There were no burrs and it was kept very clean.
I never attempted any polishing or what not. Traded it for GP100.

No burrs, cleaned it.
Probably going to pick up 100 rounds of Federal and 100 of Tula, and see how it feeds.

Recoil spring should be changed, it was a police trade in was it not. Clean and properly lubricate it and change the recoil spring, I'd wager it fixes the feed issue.

I second this.

Aside from the recoil spring , I would look into changing out the springs in your magazines

And shooting good ammo, forget the steel cased stuff until you have the problem figured out at least.

One of the magazines was a new one, and the issue still happened, will look into a new recoil spring.

Should we get a new locking block as well?

You never mentioned if your mags were Beretta brand or some off-brand mag(s).
I had an 84f in .380 that never jammed until is inserted a no-name brand mag that caused endless problems; when I switched back to Beretta brand mags, problem went away.
I third or is it fourth the idea of new springs or better yet, new Beretta mags.

One's Beretta the other isn't, but it happens with both both mags.

Did you feel for a bur? In my view there's got to be something catching on the brass. Changing the recoil spring to a stiffer spring might also work. But if the brass is catching on something, it only makes sense to remove it. A round fine jewlers file might do the trick. Just don't remove too much. Modern tooling leaves burs, and we see it in revolvers all the time. In many cases use wears them away -- and in your case wear may eventually fix it. But take a small jeweler's file and gently work your way around the area where the chamber meets the ramp and along the top of the chamber. Try also to chamber an empty case (slowly) and see if you can. (I have a S&W 645 that will do it, but I don't know if the Beretta will.)

Let me clarify, when the gun jams, the slide locks back, and the cartridge rests on the feed ramp/ chamber.

Are you saying the SLIDE LOCKS OPEN and ENGAGES THE SLIDE LOCK?

Yep. My descriptive writing could use some work, eh?
Any idea on why it would happen prematurely?

So, should I get a replacement locking block kit, or is a recoil spring sufficient?
