The Rolex in photos thread -- Here (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=556876) -- got me thinking about all the really sharp photos I've seen members post of their guns. Let's see your single favorite gun photo you've taken. I could look at gun-art all day.

I guess this one would be my closest to "art." It's my STI Escort with custom grips Esmeralda made at my request (mosaic checkering on cocobolo, with "Pro Ecclesia" inscribed on one side and "Pro Texana" on the other). The background is the top of a hall table I made from quartersawn oak.

G27RR, Sharp auto! I love the grips. They really dress up the STI. What's the recoil like?

Recoil isn't a problem for me, and it's a bit softer than a Colt Defender, possibly due to the Recoil Master guide rod setup. It's got a good push back into the palm, but not as much muzzle rise as a Glock 27 .40.

The "art" part of the picture was an accident. I had moved it onto the table for better lighting. It wasn't until I saw the picture later on that I realized the wood backdrop looked really nice with that particular pistol.

I love the photos!

I'm especially wowed by Sharspdressed's Colt and Blacksky's last photo with the matching stag grips. (Personally, I'm a little envious of Blacksky's Smith collection, they're all sharp. I especially love the vintage Smith's).

Threeband's photo looks like a couple of vintage gun ads I've seen, and Cottswald's Marlin just makes me want to go shoot .22s all afternoon.

Not a photo, but the following two images were done using the Gradient Mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator. The actual Illustrator file is completely vector and can conceivably be scaled to any size with no loss in resolution whatsoever.

justin, that HK is impressive, is that a rendered 3d model?

No, the image is completely 2D, created using Adobe Illustrator CS3. The Gradient Mesh tool in Illustrator basically works by allowing the user to define specific colors at the points where the lines cross, and then interpolates those colors from each given point to the surrounding points.

Often times, though, the resulting mesh wireframe will look a lot like a 3D model.

I bought this 45 from my neighbor. He was a cowboy from Montana that worked on our ranch for forty years. He was a pretty decent artist and did those grips. He loved guns but would never clean them and didn't care if they got all scratched up. While he was doing the filing on those grips he knew to stop filing when he started taking finish off the action. Having Polio as a kid made it painful to walk, but on a horse he was a hell of a cowboy. Rode all his horses in spade bits, a real traditional horseman. He passed away a year and a half ago and we all miss him a lot.

I'd like to say it's because I have mastered the understanding of the wave/particle duality of light and I was able to calculate when the sun, moon, and stars were at the optimal positions for creating the ideal photograph of my woodpile (and firearm). BUT, in reality I just got lucky. And I bought this really cool software for processing High Dynamic Range photos.

Thanks. The BHP is my favorite. This one was built in 1972 and is still the most pointable and comfortable gun to shoot. Don't think I'll ever part with it.

Stromhammer, I'm with you on that; the BHP is a work of art. I'm mostly a revolver fan. I've just always been a WAY better shot with the wheelguns than the automatics, but the BHP and the 1911 are the exceptions. I can't hit the proverbial barn door with the Beretta, the S&W, or much of any other auto, but the John Moses Browning designs fit me right well.

King of the Hill, I LOOOOVE that longslide 1911. If you ever get tired of it, just let me know. :D

The Mecate is goat hair and from Mexico. The spade with the Carmel cheekpieces is a handmade bit from Mexico. I added the two because my neighbor rode all his horses in hackamores, two rein then spades. He was a big inspiration in getting my horse from the hackamore to a spade. We got our vaquero gear from the same old cowboy that would travel to Mexico to get it.
