IIRC the Winchester 670 was the economy version of the post '64 model 70 actions. Thus it is a "push feed" that doesn't hold the cartridge with the extracor hook as it feeds it into the chamber. The post '64 actions were cheaper to manufacture, and at the same time they went to stocks with impressed checkering, which added to the aura of economy. Later models of the post '64 action added a bolt guide to smooth the function of the action, something which was built into the older design with the Mauser style of extractor. If it's in good condition, you should get a lifetime of service out of this rifle. Don't worry that it's not a collector's item, take it out and have a good time!

Introduced in 1966 and discontinued in 79. 287,648 made. SN start at 100000. IIRC the A variation had a three position safety.

winchester 670A-243 win
made in New Haven Con

IT WAS THE FIRST RIFLE I BOUGHT ABOUT 26 YEARS AGO. IT HAS A 22" HEAVY BARREL AND A 3-9 VARIABLE. I'VE SHOT OUT TO 950 YARDS AND HIT A 12" STEEL PLATE. COULD BE A LUCKY SHOT OR I'M PRETTY GOOD WITH IT.

LOOKS LIKE IT HAS A MODEL 70 BOLT. COULD THAT BE POSSIBLE? I BOUGHT IT USED.

ANY AND ALL HELP WOULD BE GREAT

THANKS

obsessed,
Yes, the bolt looks like a model 70 because it is. The models 670 & 770 were Winchester's way of competing with other manufacturer's economy models. Both models use the same action and bolt as the 70, the main difference is in the finish. They have less expensive stocks and the metal has a matte finish to eliminate polishing. Except for cosmetics, they are basically model 70s. Yours is the heavy barrel varmint model.

Hope this helps.
