I just picked up an octagonal 1890 winchester rifle barrel (only) at an antique store. From the stamping of 22 short on top near the threads I believe it is a first model. I thought it might be a candidate to be relined by someone restoring an old 1890 but when I measured it, it is coming up about ¾ inch short in length- as you can see it is “missing” in front of the front sight. Doesn’t look to be sawed off- possibly a factory job? My questions are- Why would someone shorten the barrel, and does anyone have any idea what the strange stampings are on the under side ? (see photos) I’m wondering if it’s an old gallery barrel that’s had the daylights shot out of it then replaced, or maybe something strange like a factory test barrel? Any ideas would be appreciated…

The usual reason for shortening a barrel (other than to make a more concealable weapon) is to get rid of muzzle damage to the barrel, especially damage to the crown that would make the gun inaccurate. The barrel could be usable if the rifling is good but of course the shortening would keep it from being "correct". The markings are probably factory inspectors' marks. They have no real meaning in themselves and the records of who was given what stamp are long lost.

Thanks for the info- looks like I have a first model Winchester tomato stake! At least someone back then got a lot of use out of it and hopefully enjoyed shooting their 1890.

Cleaning rod wear took all the rifling out at the muzzle.
So they cut it off to get back past the "blunderbus" at the end.

I've seen them done before, and I have seen a lot more that needed it done!
