I plan to buy a new Uberti 1860 Army .44 revolver soon, and I'm going to buy a Lee mould for the balls. What's the best size for a Lee mould, is it .454? Thanks.

For the Uberti 1860 I think it is the best size as long as pure lead is used to cast. Some folks like to load the .457 in their Walkers but for that model it's split about down the middle.

I use .457 balls in my Uberti 1860, same as for my ROAs, but I don't know if that is typical.

Most Ubertis need 454 balls, but I have a few cylinders that need 457.

It looks like I'll try the .454 mould and cross my fingers. I guess I can send it back and exchange it if it doesn't work.

After you've used it?

Yeah, I guess I can't return it after using it. I could trade it to someone if it comes to that.

You could go buy a box of 454 & 457 round balls for $20.00 & see which?? Gives you the best Ring & groups. Then buy your mold
Or even better I can mail you a few of each

I just bought an 1860 this weekend, and although I haven't fired it yet, I did test a .454 ball on top of the chambers and they will be a tite fit on mine. just like they should be.

Thanks for the offer Husker, but I'm going to buy the mould and probably cast some balls before I get the gun. Most everyone seems to think .454 will work, so that's what I'll go with. I asked Track Of The Wolf, and they said .454 is best too.

I've owned about 20 44 cal C&Bs and they ALL take/took .454 balls without any problems. I have, however used .457 balls in a few guns when I ran short of cast .454s and they worked just fine too. I have not done accuracy tests on which size worked the best. I have had some guns show "ball creep' with .451 diameter balls.

No prob DMF. They are 10 to 11 dollars a 100 lot. So I just buy them. 454s will fall out of my Walker. But work great in my Fllipietta New Army.
