All the Stuff You Don't Use

I dumped my rifles since I have no use for them. I don't get to use my fixed blades often since they have to be open carried here.

Handguns and folding knives get lots of use since I can carry them all the time and can find competitive venues to run my handguns pretty much any given weekend. The shotgun still stands on duty for home defense though I only get to run it a few times a year at the matches.

What do you guys have laying around that you can't use--either because the appropriate ranges are too far away, or for whatever legal reasons?

I'll probably take my fixed blades jogging with me just so I have an excuse to wear them. And so I get in shape every time I get an itch to wear it :)

I guess that would depend on the definition of "use". If staring lovingly at them means "use", then I use everything - If carrying or shooting regularly means "use", then I could sell everything but two or three guns, and maybe two knives. "Use" and "need" are kinda similar in that way.

I don't have anything like the time I'd like for shooting .. rifles in particular ... but ''use''? ..... well I gain great pleasure from ownership .. as well as shooting so ...... they stay, even if excercized rather too infrequently.

Anyways ..... wife knows that when I ''pop off'' she can sell only some and still afford to bury me!! As long as the good stuff goes to my son!:)

It's a sorta ''insurance'' .... with practical applications!:p

Well, when I get a bunch of money, then I'm gonna have a Barrett M82A1 I can't use because there's no good range to fire it around here that doesn't cost a metric ***load to join, and I can't spend two metric ***loads of money at once...

<went and looked>

Now I remember! I got two sturdy Glock 23 holsters for a decent price, with a double mag carrier, and got the Safariland Sig 226 holster, belt, and radio carrier for free! :D Now, if I just had a Sig...or a Glock 23!

Generally, I keep them, because one day I may have an opportunity to use them again.

A few years back, I dumped a really nice assortment
of HP rifles myself. :( Included in that blow-out were:
a 4 rifle set of Remington 700 BDL's in cal's: a) .22-250,
b) .243, c) .25-06, and d) 7m/m mag. Also, there was
one Ruger 77-R in .338 Winchester mag. All guns were
bought NIB by me; and used strictly for target shooting!
I am NOT a hunter, so these guns had NEVER been in
the woods. I converted these weapon's into some
"instant cash" and reinvested in other firearms
that were of interest too me. :uhoh: :D

Best Wishes,

I have a Marlin 336 that never gets used. It was a Christmas present when I was 16. Back in those days I used it to go hunting with my grandfather. Now I don't hunt anymore, it's no good for target work, I don't enjoy shooting it (scope is mounted too high but can't go any lower because of rear sight), and I haven't tuned the ejector since I replaced it several years ago (old one broke, new one is for same model but doesn't fit exactly right though still works). It won't ever be sold because 1) it was a gift and 2) it isn't worth enough to sell. I'll probably end up taking the scope off of it and putting it on something else in the future.

I do have a few .22 rifles that are in pieces simply because I'm too slack to fix them (one needs a lifter spring and the other needs the stock refinished - I got the sanding done before I lost interest but no finish).

I don't have any firearms that don't get used several times a year at the very least. I shoot at Rio Salado, about 30 minutes from my place, and anything that can be carried to the line can be fired there.:D

I don't often use 90% of my rifles and handguns and blades.

I don't often use the top 70 mph of my car's speed capability, too, but that doesn't mean I have any burning desire to slap a governor on it. ;)

I'd hate to live in some mundane world where I was only allowed to own useful stuff... :uhoh:

(As a F'rinstance:
I own eight 1911's:
Two see use as "Heavy Rotation" carry guns, and get carried pretty much every week.
Two more get used for "dress carry" occasions, such as when I have out-of-town company or attend a party.
One is a "beater" carry gun, and maybe gets worn once or twice a month when cutting firewood or doing other yard chores.
One is a "range only" target gun, and is fired maybe once a month at range sessions.
Two more are "project guns" that will need work before fitting into any useful role, but I'll eventually get around to setting them up and fitting them into the carry battery somehow.

I own, well, a lot of milsurp rifles. Most get shot maybe once a year. Who cares? They're still enjoyable to handle, study, and grok. And if I get the urge to shoot one of these pieces of history, well, I have at least one box of ammo for each and every one of them.

Different items have different uses. )

Well growing up poor has it's advantages.
Having back-ups or being redundant comes from the way I grew up. My uncle really really wanted a new K frame tha tcame out out best I recall, not enough money, and wouldn't trade in the one he had similar. He decided to buy a second one that was used , better to have back-up, he shot it some, but it was a second gun.

I've never really had much, really never 'wasted money" on stuff. I say I'm not sentimental but maybe I am. I have gotten rid of a bunch other non-gun stuff, but that's just because I'm older and stuff accumulates, gets outgrown,or I grow up and realize how nice simple is. One just gets stuff by simply living for a bit.

I , well actually Mom ,asked about a box in the attic, I had put up there between moves once...sheesh, seems like every darn match/tourney I showed up to was giving cleaning kits and cleaning doo-dads in the shooters kits...I bet I gave away to new shooters/CCW students $500 worth of stuff...and not one darn bottle of oil in my apt to quiet a squeaky hinge. I had to dig around here to find my antiquated cleaning stuff ( Kit and Kaboodle and Kleenbore kit) to clean my darn gun once, Usuallydo this at my buddies place and use his stuff. I found a red/yellow/black can of Winchester gun oil, and a tin can of Hoppe's gun oil...got by with lighter fluid and that to get by...Still need darn oil for my squeaky hinge. Probably need to consider getting some cleaning stuff for around here...nah.

I still have part of a box of 32 ga shotgun shells...hell I dunno maybe the fella that moved away with the gun will come visit, or the shotgun fairy will drop by.

Went to TN the other night, reminded me I still have TN ,KY, PA, AR,WVA, and NM "Official Terrosit Hunting Permits" ...I have been in all those states except NM, gonna hold onto it...ya never know. :D

I personally cannot imagine dumping a rifle due to lack of need. One never knows when they will need a rifle. Other than that I try to limit impulse purchases, to keep platform commonality. So that's why it's acceptable for me to buy 4 BHP, a buncha Glocks or whatever. I already have the tools, holsters and mags laying about for them.

I've got a big box (okay, so it's really a crate) of stuff I don't technically need. But it's fun to know I have it. I have more Mosins and Stevens 311's than anyone has a need for, but I did get rid of my 13 .380 pistols.

Skunk,

all your saying is, you didn't plan well logistically

If you learn to shoot your rifle well.. then you'll want to keep it. the trick is practicing..

BTW.. a fixed blade.. MUCH more intimidating than a folder..

I don't have enough guns that I've reached a point where I can't/don't/won't shoot them all.

Ask me again in 25 years. (I doubt the answer will be different, but who knows...)

Not many rifle/shotgun ranges around here in mega-anti territory, so therefore they don't get much use.

They use too much land, I guess. Much easier to put a handgun range in a warehouse complex than build an outdoor range (which might disturb some leftist's weekend nap).

For instance, the closest rifle range is at the dump, and I bet people STILL complain about the noise ("I was dropping off the old couch and all I could hear was those nuts firing their eeevvviiiilll guns!".)

Only exception is when out on the bike I try to keep it in the upper limits at all times.

Skunk, you don't think you need the rifle now. During the next riot, your handgun will not be enough. Needs can change fast.

You need a handgun, shotgun, and rifle. You just don't need them right now.

I like to plan ahead. Therefore, I buy stuff that I might need in the future.

I have four or five shotguns that probably haven't been fired in three years, but that, to me, is just incentive to get back into the skeet circut... :D

Skunk,
I know what you mean, but ......keep in mind handguns and folding knives exist only for convenience. they are both somewhat easier to "bear" or carry as we go about our daily lives. This is a good thing, but ......

If it every become VERY IMPORTANT for you to shoot something or cut something, and all you have is a convenient handgun or folding knife, you will INSTANTLY wish you had an effective longarm or fixedblade.

Handguns are basically puny and ineffective, and should be used to fight your way to yourrifle , and folders are just pre-broken fixed blades.

Skunk, GET A RIFLE and sharpen your fixed blade.

I have 2 rifles that very seldom every see the light of day. The first one is a CAR-15 original. I bought it years and years ago before the ban and IIRC only paid $550.00. I clean it up and shot it a few times and have had it in the back of my safe for years. I can't seem to part with it though. The other is an H&K G3 that I bought from a police auction in Tulsa years ago. The H&K is all original and preban as well. Both are in very good shape and I think the last time I shot them was well over a year ago. I guess I'll give them to my son when he gets old enough.

I don't shoot many of my rifles on a regular basis, but I am glad that I have them, because when you need a rifle, there is pretty much nothing else that can substitute. Their sights/scopes are zeroed in, and I do check the zeroes occasonally, and know that I can hit what I'm aiming at with any of them.

That being said, I practice much more with my handguns, because that is what I carry on a daily basis, and if I were ever to get into a situation where I needed a firearm, one of my handguns would likely be the firearm that I have on me at the time. I think that, in this day and age, handgun practice is more important, because of the above stated reason. But, different strokes for different folks.

Will, I'd carry a fixed blade, but in CA they have to be carried openly...if you get caught with it concealed, it's a FELONY, but if you get caught with a loaded handgun, it's a misdemeanor. Go figure

Too bad my CCW doesn't cover fixed blades, I can carry 3 Berettas if I wanted to.

I think it was Clint Smith that said:

"The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight. I’d choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic bomb instead."

Reason enough to keep a rifle around the house.

There is also another old saying, author unknown: "A handgun can win a battle, a rifle can win a war."

Just my .02,

Haven't those pesky Germans already done this for you, Tamara. :p

Isn't the Z3 1.9 electronically "speed" limited to 116 mph from the factory? Also, aren't the 2.3 & 2.8 Zee-3's electronically limited to 128 mph as well? Heck, and to round out the various Z3 models, doesn't even the vaunted M Roadster have a factory installed speed limit of 137 mph? :neener:

It's your money, they're your posessions. Do what works for you. Personally I don't own enough firearms to leave a bunch of them laying around unused, but if I want to that's my decision.

Tamara

Also, aren't the 2.3 & 2.8 Zee-3's electronically limited to 128 mph as well?

US-spec 6-cylinder Zed Threes are governed to one-thirty-five-ish. Mine tops out at a hair over a buck-forty indicated. Four-cylinder Zed Threes run out of fun at about a buck-fifteen and M Roadsters top out on the rev limiter at 140 mph.

Since BMW and M-B have a 155 mph "gentleman's agreement" (to avoid provoking the legislative ire of the German Green Party) it just wouldn't do to have a $50k roadster that runs as fast as a $90k sedan.

FWIW, I doubt my Z3 2.8 would pull much over 150, limiter or no; it's really no stronger at the top end of fifth than my 924S was...

...uh, whether or not it had a bunch of guns in the trunk. :uhoh:

;) :D

I actually know the answer to this question.

There are two kinds of people: (1) reasonable, intelligent people (like me) who hang on to everything they've ever owned, just because you never know if you might need it, and (2) anti-acquisition-Nazis (like my wife) who throw things away, or sell them at garage sales, if you haven't used them in the past four days.

I'm exaggerating a little to make the point, but the fundamental point is valid.

I've never shot rifles much and always preferred handguns, but I still have 6 ranging from .17HMR to .50 Black Powder. I don't have any plans to get rid of any, and now that I'm a member at a good range I may get more and get more into it. I've only ever sold one gun, a .30-30 Win M94, and I still regret it!

I know people that have paintings worth nearly $100,000. They don't "use" them for anything but to look at.....and also to show off to their friends

America is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Spoiled. We're pack rats and collectors. Look at all the U-Store-It places around. Now, if you think of it, how silly is it to have so much crap that you can't even store it at your house, but you're willing to pay storage on it. And obviously you don't use it, or you'd keep it at home.

And, if it wasn't for useless stuff, what would you give and get for Christmas???;)

I've got:
2 scopes (one BSA, one NStar(?)... neither have ever been on a rifle)
A Czech Mauser bayo (I don't own a Mauser)
A Winchester 1911SL (I've never fired it)
A Winchester 100 12ga Valu-Pak (I don't own a shotgun, other than the previously mentioned Winchester)
10rds of 7.62x51 (I have never owned a rifle in .308)
~450 empty 7.62 x 54R brass (I sold my M44 months ago and don't reload)
A Fobus holster for a Walther PPK (once again, never owned a Walther).

All of it I've had for at least 4 months and they're doing nothing except collecting dust.

Maybe I should do something to remedy all of this... :uhoh:
