I really like folders for hunting and carry because my sheath knives get lost under coats/bibs/layers. With a nice stout folder, I can keep my knife on the outer layer.
I sure like the looks of the Buck, how does it perform?

I don't have one but my best friend does, and that is one heck of a stout knife. I honestly think you could baton stuff with it, though neither he nor I want to test that theory out. Certainly the blade itself would be capable, but neither of us wants to abuse the lock.
Personally, I don't think it would be a particularly great hunting knife. Basically, it just doesn't have a great blade profile for skinning or gutting. I also wouldn't particularly recommend it as a carry knife. It is a big, thick heavy knife, and I don't think you would enjoy it at all in your pocket. It does have a clip, but it also comes with a belt sheath and I think there is a reason for that.
Now, as a outdoors knife in general? Pretty tough, and worth the money. I would feel totally comfortable if I got stuck in the boonies and this was my only knife.
If your up for suggestions, there are any number of good folders that would work better for you in a hunting rol. To include, for example, knives like the Ka-Bar Doziers, and the "Phat Bob" model in particular. Keep in mind that I am not specifically recommending those as I don't own one and have no experience with them, but just putting them out there to give you an idea of something that might work better.

kbbailey,
I bought a Buck folder about 42 years ago, came with a leather pouch, was the biggest folder they made at that time. I still have it, and its the sharpest folder you'd want to carry. The blade is heavy, the bolsters are still very tight, I have and you can, skin elk, deer or moose with it, a very dependable knife!

kbbailey,
I just went off line here a moment ago to check the name , its a Buck "Hunter", folding knife, go for about $66.00, but unless you lose it, you'll have it forever!
Good luck!
Do you know where Lafayette is? That's where I'm at now.

The Buck 110 Hunter is as classic a hunting knife as there is, no doubt. Unless I am mistaken (and I probably am), the 110 is considered to have pretty much defined the modern folding hunting knife. I have one, as do about a jillion other guys. It's a nice knife, still very viable for use in the field, and has been in continuous production since about 1964. There is a smaller, but identical model called the Buck 112 Ranger that is also quite nice.
Believe it or not, 788Ham, it still isn't as heavy and beefy as that Buck/TOPS CSAR is. Maybe as wide, but not as heavy, and the blade on the 110 1s nowhere near as thick. As a hunting knife, in my opinion, the 110 is superior to the CSAR. As a rescue/survival knife? I would go with the CSAR every time. The 110 was a pretty popular knife for the troops in Vietnam and I saw more than a couple being carried in Desert Storm and Somalia. A couple of guys on here that were in Vietnam carried them and have discussed how they developed a one-handed opening technique for them!
Also, I sure do know where Lafayette is. My cousin lives there and my best friend Brad and a couple of other buddies live in the general vicinity.
