A friend of mine has for sale a springfield M-1 Garand in 7.62x51 that I would love to pick up. It is one of the commercially produced rifles they made in the late 1990's. I can not find any indication on line what these are going for. There are plenty of conversions around but I can not find any info on the Springfield factory made rifles. Anyone have an idea what these are going for?

There are two on Gunbroker (Springfield M1A1) with $1300-$1400 opening bids.

Those would be M1A's, civilian versions of the M-14. I was asking about the commercially produced M-1 Garands, you know, en bloc fed, made for less than 5 years, etc.

If I remember right, they were about $900-1000 when they came out. They couldn't charge too much more than a pretty nice war time Garand would go for. I would say that they would be in the same range today....a little more or less.

When they came out - they were tagged at $1200 to 1600. Special commemoratives were tagged at over $2000. They didn't move at those prices, at least not well enough to warrant continued production - too much pressure from CMP selling the real thing rather than off shore copies. Today, when you see them for sale - they are tagged in the $600 to $900 range. The Commemoratives - well, they sit on the shop racks, on consignment, with the owners tag reading $2000.

I would not spend my money on one unless I knew the rifle would function and I could buy it for about $300.

So many of those things would not function out of the box because of the worn out parts.

If--If and it is a big if: The Obama administration allows the importation of the Korean Garands, I would expect that to really impact the market.

I too am looking for a Garand, and the CMP has service grade M1s for $795. I can't see much point in paying any more than that.

It looks like a review says the MSRP was $1061 if that helps: http://www.shootingtimes.com/longgun_reviews/st_0302_springfield/

I greatly appreciate everyones' replies. I was thinking a broad range of $600-800 or so. Looks like another .308 in my future!

You can probably find a Genuine forged receiver GI M1 that's had a .308 barrel installed for about that FYI. If you're interested.

Last July the CMP listed many Service Grade Garands for about $595. There are still some for $595.

Not bad for that price. The bore in my rifle (which was bought in August) looks like it is chrome-lined.
