Hello, Recently I bought a CAI L1A1 sporter from a friend f the family ( retired policeman) and was looking around for ammo and a few mags.something occurred to me and I am unsure what to do. Would Brown bear 308 foul up the rifle or am I OK to use the Russian stuff until I can find a better price for 500 or a 1000 rounds?

and would anyone know where I can find 3 or so 2 Mag pouches that will work with the standard pistol belts? the few I have say the are South African made but again I am as Green as green can be...
thanks for any suggestion and thanks for puttin' up with me

The Russian steel-case stuff is tolerable, but I can't really recommend it. But it shouldn't damage the rifle if you choose to use it. Check out AIM Surplus and Palmetto State Armory for good prices on brass surplus ammo, which is often around 40 cents/round these days.

Do you know if your rifle takes metric or "inch" mags? A true L1A1 takes "inch" mags, but most CAI sporters are on metric receivers and therefore take metric mags. Which is good because metric mags are much easier to find and cost less. You can find metric mags at WhatACountry.com or Palmetto State Armory, and occasionally other places. Inch mags will require some hunting if you actually need them.

You may find suitable mag pouches, as well as most other parts, at DS Arms:

Also, any MOLLE-compatible magazine pouches can be used on a regular belt, even though that's not their design purpose. Just loop the straps through the weave straps to get a useful opening. That may not make sense in the abstract, but will be obvious if you have a MOLLE pouch in front of you. The ones sized for M14 or AR-10 mags will generally work fine for FAL mags.
