SWAT (movie/DVD)

I have not seen the SWAT movie yet. The DVD is being advertised and looks interesting.

Will you buy this DVD? If so, why? If not, why not?

Tactical popcorn movie; fun flick. If I wanted realistic, I'd be sending my resume to LAPD.

Now the question is what color is tactical popcorn?

Target will have the DVD for $15.99 on Tuesday, and Walmart will price theirs lower as per their own rules, so maybe I'll pick it up :)

It should have some good extras on it.

For extras, I suggest you check out the Criterion Collection edition of The Rock, it has some awesome weapons stuff on it according to my buddy.

Skunk: It's gotta be matte carbon black. Easy enough to do, though it tastes nasty...

If you remember the mid-1970s TV series (Robert Urich's first big part), check out who is driving the truck in the very last scene. ;)

There is an interesting deleted scene where a couple LAPD officers run into a gun store to borrow AR-15's during the shootout at the beginning of the movie (ala b&b guns during the LA bank robbery shootout?)

The gun store clerk starts out with some reply about well, those were banned, and...

and the officers say something like, please! we're getting way outgunned out there!

and the gun store guy hands them a couple AR-15's.

The officers yell, "thanks buddy! we owe you one" or something like that on their way out the door

Just take the movie for what it is - a movie. I found it to be reasonably entertaining. Naturally I could not help but to critique the mistakes that invariably appear. Those of us on this site and others are going to do that.

I'll get it. I thought it was pretty good. That 50 with the can on it was awesome.

What kind of handguns make appearences in SWAT?

Lightsped, SWAT handguns I caught were the Kimber TLE (but it has a Series II!!!!) and the S&W 4506.

I saw it in the theatre a week after it was released. It's an ok movie. 2 out of 4 stars. Worth watching once, but definitely not worth buying on DVD, unless you get it for $8 after tax which is about the same cost as your average non-matinee movie ticket.

If you don't have The Rock Criterion Edition, you should buy that before you buy SWAT. I remember when I bought the first version of The Rock on DVD and was horrified with the non-anamorphic transfer. I waited years for a re-release on DVD and was blessed by the Criterion release. I have two copies, one sealed and one opened for watching. Criterion has a tendency to discontinue DVDs (ie: Robocop and The Silence of the Lambs).

The extras disc has the gunplay in Hollywood featurette where they talk about gun handling in movies. They also have a great featurette of the SEAL team insertion. The underwater footage was pretty much all models.

I make every attempt to not support the Hollywood Movie industry. They will get no money from me. On the other hand, I may eventually bootleg a copied DVD from someone else who owns it ;)

Gonna watch in a couple of hours. I'll judge then.
Gonna make my mother watch it too. hehehehe

I bought the DVD today too. Nothing spectacular in the extras, but its pretty cool.

Hmm, let's see... it was not 100% realistic (as far as I can say :) ), but way better than most Hollywood products.

BTW can anyone suggest realistic "tactical" movies (other than the evergreen WOTG)??

I noticed this too. Now that I think about it though, I think they may have done this to represent the stupidity of reporters:uhoh:

I bought it but havent watched it yet . My reason for watching it ,is to see Michelle Rodrequiz run around with a gun.;)

in the hi-jacked bus scene, theey do have supressed pistols, but doesn't the guy standing at the squad yank out an AK after SWAT shows up?

I thought that the gunshop scene SUCKED!

First it shows AR15s as the only thing around that can punch through body armor.

Then it implies ARs are stone illegal in CA for that reason **DOH! thats true:banghead: **

Then it makes it seem like every gun dealer would have evil, armor piercing illegal weapons ready for sale in the back room!:fire:

Didn't the bad guy have a Sig sport in the end of the movie? Could be wrong but I thought it was.

I didn't catch the whole gun but he did have something that was compensated. I remember seeing it at the end when they were fight at the train tracks.

Overall I would give the movie 2 out 4 stars. I thought it started off good but took a dive when the whole 100 million dollars thing started.

Were there any realistic SWAT scenes (not gun-scenes but SWAT scenes)? Maybe at the beginning but then you have the typical bad cop that disobeys orders, blah, blah, blah. I wanted to see some room clearing and stuff like that but in the end I felt they never did anything that really differentiated SWAT.

The only completely stupid thing I saw involved the claymore...and no, I'm not talking about blowing the gate with it, however silly that may have been. Earlier, when the bad guy was rigging the mine, he was squatting in front of it!!! Yikes!!!

The U.S. Marshals PAO pulled all backing from the film when the screenwriters refused to change the script so that in the (now deleted) scene where the mobster was handed over from LAPD SWAT to the Marshals, that Tommy Lee Jones slapped the cuffs on him and the rest of the movie was about Tommy Lee Jones and the mobster crossing the desert on foot, fighting each other, the elements and the mobsters uncle's local hoods who were determined to take control of the US end of the operation and get revenge for the murder of their boss at the beginning of the movie.

The subplot detailing the relationship with Baxter's sister and the scenes where Officer Vasquez was fitted for body armor and squad suit were deleted after Kimber, Colt and HK threatened to pull all technical support. Something about an audience in Indiana that wouldn't notice their products highlighted.....


Look for the directors cut including the deleted scenes and the alternate Tommy Lee Jones ending in the boxed set special edition, set to go on sale in time for Christmas 04 :D

I was told the movie was realistic except for the tumble roll of the SWAT guys during time trials. However, the opening shootout with the bad guys in the street (ala North Hollywood bank shootout style) was quite disturbing. Cops are running around on the street like chickens with their heads cut off, some are behind squads, a couple have shotguns, but the police snipers just wait patiently. Apparently, they were not to shoot unless the bad guys try to get away, and so when one hops behind the wheel of the car, the sniper shoots him. At what point in time during a gun fight where cops are getting mowed down do snipers sit on their thumbs? Pa-lease!

I liked the silenced pistols during the bus hijacking. It was amazing how that little round went all the way through the driver, killing him, and then hit the window.

It was stupid when the bus pulled over without authorization. There was no reason for that to happen and even seemed to go against the grain of what was being discussed with the dispatcher.

Fun movie, but not really up to snuff and the sad part was that it was not up to snuff because of all the bragging within the movie about how good SWAT was. LA SWAT may be that good, but the movie doesn't hold up.

Oh, and in the trials in the early part of the movie, apparently finishing the course first was not significant, only the shots. Since finishing first was not significant, I am not sure why they raced.

The claymore stuff was just stupid.

The really stupid part of the movie is first, they apparently let the world know when and how they are going to transport the prisoner to federal custody. Secondly, after their helicopter is shot down, they elect to immediately go back outside. What is the need to rapidly get the prisoner out of the safety of the police station and into public where they know there are armed BGs waiting in ambush?

I liked it. Entertaining, however, the learjet taking off at the end was quite unrealistic. A lear only needs a couple thousand feet, and accelerates like a bat-out-o-hell.....that suburban would have been left scratching its arse!
Still...compared to most of the hollyweird tripe....its a good action bang-em-up good-guys-win flik....the gunnery is decent, the goodguys get wounded and killed on occassion.

I am watching it right now. Within about the first half hour of the movie I knew exactly what was going to happen and who would be involved.
That doesn't make me happy.

Of course the paramedics are a bunch of clowns, but that goes without saying. If you think the research the movie industry doesn't do on police operations is bad ..........................................................

After slowing the scene to frame by frame, it looks like perhaps a Tec-9 or something similar.:scrutiny:
