I purchased a ruger GP100 back in the 80's, gave it to my brother as a birthday/xmas present. This was purchased in the mid 80's On his way to go camping a state trooper took the gun out of a locked box and took his ammo out of another locked box and now plan to distroy it if I can't come up with the reciept this happened in 2010. When purchased I did all the paper work to purchase, I have the serial number. Is there any place ,group, agency I can go to to get proof of ownership since I can't find the original bill of sale?

Thank you.

My Response:
I suppose full details would be helpful if you could provide them. There must be a reason the trooper took the firearm. For example if your brother was ineligible to own firearms.

What state does he live in (or you for that matter)? Registration is mandatory in some states and if the firearm was gifted across state lines that's a no-no AFAIK. You would have needed to use a gun dealer with a federal firearms license for him to obtain possession from another state. Since it was a GP100 revolver I know of no general restrictions on six cylinder revolvers, but then again we also do not know which state he resides in.

Do you still have the receipt? That would be your best bet for recovering the pistol, barring any other illegalities on your part. If the letter of the law was followed then I don't see why there should be no problem.

About 6 years ago I sold a rifle to a neighbor. It was stolen in a robbery and when it was found, he needed proof of ownership to get it back. I contacted the gun shop I bought it from and they sent me a copy of the bill of sale. I then wrote a bill of sle to my neighbor and every thing was fine.

All this to tell you to contact the shop- where yoyu bought the gun for a copy of a bill of sale

I don't think he has to prove ownership, just a legal right to possess or carry it. Contact a lawyer.

There is clearly a lot more to this story than has been told. Based on what's here so far the only answer is "call a lawyer".

I don't believe the question is "how do I show proof of ownership" but "why am I being asked to in the first place".
