On New Year's Eve, sharpshooters will be posted on Las Vegas hotel roofs.

(Pasadena, California-AP) -- With the nation's terrorism alert at its second-highest level, security will be extra-tight at New Year's Eve celebrations around the country.

Military helicopters will patrol over the Rose Parade, Times Square, the Las Vegas Strip and in other cities with big outdoor gatherings.

In Las Vegas, sharpshooters will be posted on hotel-casino roofs, and streets will be blocked off with concrete barricades.

In Pasadena, video surveillance cameras will watch spectators lining the five-and-a-half mile Rose Parade route.

Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge tells C-B-S' "Early Show" the level of security around the United States right now is "absolutely unprecedented."

What can a sharpshooter do from a rooftop over looking tens of thousands of people partying in the street?

Does the shooter have the authority to use lethal force based on what he sees through his scope?

Can the shooter tell that one person out of the whole crowd is wearing a bomb and intends to detonate it at the stroke of midnight? What about all the people that set off fireworks in the street?

I just don't see how a roof-top sniper adds any real security in this situation.

I actually would be surprised to learn there wouldn't be sharpshooters on the roofs. Now if thats a ok thing to be happening, thats another issue.

Helicopters, sharpshooters, cops in ninja costumes on the corner - I think half of this stuff is for show. The real work is in investigation and apprehension of terrorists before they can strike.

Man, to hear him droning on "We want everyone to leave security to the experts...everyone just go on about your business." Great advice Mr. Mayor. :rolleyes:

I wonder where the "jumping off point" is in all this, i.e. at what point do Americans actually say to themselves "I may not be willing to change my lifestyle for a possible terrorist threat, but maybe, just maybe, I might not want to attend one of the biggest targets of a possible terrorist action against Americans (one that's enough of a possibility that there are now snipers on the rooftops! " :scrutiny: )

Just seeing and hearing Bloomberg makes me feel sorry for New Yorkers. With him and their Senators, they've got some real leadership up there. :barf: geegee
