Yesterday I took a notion to look into the 6.8 issue as my interest was "piqued" because of some strange comments I read regarding modifying the AR-15 platform to accept it, so here go's:
1. I started scratching my head about someone saying that it was based on a modified .30 Rem case, and not the 6mmPPC, and that the 6-PPC bolt head wouldn't work.
My references show that the .30Rem and the 7.62x39 both have nominal diminsions of 0.440" dia case head. I can see that the PPC (.22 and 6mmPPC are based on .220 Russian, -based on 7.62x39 -I have dies for 3 of the 4!) case would be too short to form the 6.8case, and the neck angle and lack of case taper of the PPC would cause issues. But not the same bolt-head?
I've heard of issues of using the 0.473" of the .22-BR, 7.62x51, '06 class of cartridges, but not the 7.62x39. Dosen't/didn't Colt make some of these already? What did I miss there ??
2. Comparing the relative case volumns, the performance from a 16' bbl should indeed be what was discussed considering what the very similar 7mm Imsha and 7mm Ingram are capable of in 14" Contender bbls. The 7-30 Waters is larger in volumn but at ~40,000lbs gets 2,750fps from 20' bbls (BTDT)
3. Looking at the available 90gr, 100gr, and 110gr bullets available in Soft Point and hollowpoint, Remington will quite possibly have another "commercially successful cartridge on their hands.
I first met this cartridge with a "Yawwwwwwwwn", but after looking at the sectional density of the 110hp (.205) and bc of .319, I said Hmmmmmmm.
This compares very favorable to the 70gr bullet for the .22 Savage Highpower, and 69gr BTSP match bullets for the 5.56.
But, with more diameter/mass.
Bet it'll kill deer better than either the 5.56 (BTDT, it works quite well you know!) or the 7.62x39 (BTDT too, it too works well, just "differently")
I guess I'll probably be hunting with a 6.8 next fall on my Bushy' lower afterall, provided I can get dies and brass. Make those available and the barrels will follow !!!
