A couple years ago my brother and I inherited some guns from my grandfather. Among these was an alpine mfg m1 carbine. But when we went to shoot it, we found it was horribly inaccurate, I mean like not able to hit the broad side of a barn. We tried several different types of bullets with the same results. First thing I did when we got it was check the rifling in the barrel, it seems to be in great shape, as does the rest of the gun, but I'm no gun smith.

So the gun has been sitting in the safe for a couple years, we haven't gotten around to taking it to a gunsmith yet, mostly for financial reasons. But I thought I would see if anyone had any ideas about what could be causing its issues. Any ideas?

Interesting guns. According to this website, http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_alpine.html , the barrels used on the Alpine carbines were cut down and rethreaded military surplus barrels from the US Springfield Model 1903A3, in .30-06. It's possible the rifling twist intended for the longer, heavier .30-06 ammo doesn't work too well with the short, stubby, 110 grain carbine bullets.

+1 to what GCBurner said.

What is the condition of the gun/bore? If you've got some sort of corrosion or build-up, that will definatly make your gun less accurate.

If that's the case, then that's the reason it doesn't shoot well. A .30 Carbine should have a 1-16" twist barrel. Also, recontouring a barrel that is already rifled does nothing good in regards to bore dimensions.
