Upcoming MI CCW Changes

I see that Michigan's CCW regulations have been amended and that as of July '03, it will become legal to CCW while in establishments that derive less than 51% of their income from alcohol.

I live in Indiana, hold an Indiana License to Carry Handgun (LCH), and work in Michigan. Up until July, the two States have pretty black and white regs on carrying in places serving alcohol, to wit: No Way! in Michigan and "No Problem" in Indiana.

For those of you who have lived in States with the 51% regulations, or for those MI members who have a definitive answer on how it will be interpreted: how do you as a customer make the 51% determination? I would ASSUME (and we all know what that can lead to :p ) that a restaurant which serves alcohol would pass muster as being okay, but that a bar which serves food would not. It appears to me to be a real gray area.

Being a suspicious individual when it comes to our benevolant government  , I can just see some gendarmes in certain areas requesting profit statements from restaurants so they can observe patrons for CCW. :cuss:

Ideas anyone?

how do you as a customer make the 51% determination? Not too hard. Just read the sign at the entrance that says "This establishment derives more than 51% of its revenue from the sale of alcoholic beverages."

No sign. No problem.

Moon, why not just drink in Indiana? Lower beer taxes and no silly laws about signs to look out for.

I'm sure there will be some court cases over this one, just like there were over when we had to disclose if we were carrying during a traffic stop. I will definitely not be inquiring with the restaurants I frequent that serve alcohol as to whether or not they get 51% from alcohol, I'll worry about that if I ever have to use it in the restaurant.

El Tejon,

Much preferable. Although born and raised in MI, there are things to be said for IN.

But, seriously, I do some amount of entertaining and eating with business associates. I would greatly appreciate not having to worry about this. ("Hey, don't mind me taking off the gun, guys, but I think they sell alot of booze here!") While there are those associates who know I carry whenever legal to do so, in general I am a firm believer in the "concealed" part of the phrase!

We have the same 51% rule in Colorado. It's completely ludicrous. The obvious solution to this very minor problem is to hold firearms carriers to the same standards of alcoholic beverage consumption as drivers.

Where's that written, SW?

I've never seen it except in an older law that doesn't exist any longer in the statute search.

There may be something municipal, by Colorado per se has no such law that I'm aware of.

Only thing is you can't be in possession while intoxicated.

Waiting to know more about this one.
