I've been over the threads here and over at the Beretta forum and I can't find any chronograph data to compare with the same rounds from a handgun yet. Somebody's had to run one across a Chrony at some point. Fess up.

No "Storm" but before I sold them in 89 my 16" UZI and same in HK 94 only made 1200fps pistol ammo do 1300-1350. Figure 150fps gain, tops. Compare that to a .357 mag that gets a 500+fps gain in a carbine!;)

Not the storm but here are velocities that I got this Wednesday from my 14.5" barreled 9mm AR vs a 3.0" barreled Kahr PM9.
Load #1 Winchester USA 115 Gr FMJ ( White Box 100rd count Value Pack)
Kahr : 1020 FPS
AR15: 1280 FPS
Load #2 Speer 124 Gr +P Gold Dot
Kahr: 1093.4 FPS
AR15: 1374 FPS
Load #3 Winchester USA 115 Grain JHP (White Box 50ct)
Kahr: 989.5 FPS
AR15: 1212.2 FPS
Load #4 Winchester USA 147 Grain JHP (White Box 50ct)
Kahr: 863.82 FPS
AR15: 1002 FPS
Load #5 Federal Personal Defense 135gr JHP
Kahr: 926.64 FPS
AR15: 1133.5
The best performer for defense looks to be the 124gr Gold Dot +P.
Good Shooting

personally i would shoot load number 4 for self defense......slow moving bullet will not overpenetrate as well as the bullet carrying alot of energy with the larger grain bullet slamming into a target. I did see a chronograph somewhere but im still looking for it

Bullet weight and expansion have more to do with penetration than speed. 147 grian loads in general have more of a problem with over penetration than lighter bullet weights in the caliber. The lighter bullets are moving much faster.

The lighter bullets are moving much faster. Thats my point....the faster bullets tend to pass through an object farther than the slower bullets. From reading info. on winchesters web site the 147 grain 9mm's did not penetrate as far as the 124 grains on any test EXCEPT on the tests where the 124 expanded larger than the 147 grain bullet did. On average I would think that the 147 grain having more lead to it would have a greater chance at expanding to a larger size then the 124 grain where the mass of the bullet is not as much as it did in most of the tests on the winchesters web site. I do recognize that you are an instructor and there is a good chance you are correct.....I am just finding info. that debates the issue of the faster bullet. no offense intended just a friendly debate :D Its all gonna boil down to opinion though of what load you prefer.

Brett not trying to be a know it all. But my point was that in flesh typically heavier bullets go deeper because of their greater momentium and typically reduced expansion. However this is not always the case. Winchester Ranger 147 grain load does about the same as the +p+ 127 grain ranger load as far as expansion and penetration are concerned. Check out ammolab.com under the test results section. Its preaty good information. It has changed some of my long held views.

Just did....looks like the corbon or the triton in 115 gr. would be the way to go then for a self defense round in the 9 mm.......thank you for that web site....definately a book marker!! Like I said before though, this is more your territory than mine, just happened i found a shell that was similar in numbers that followed what I "thought" the bullets would do, but that web site definately changed my mind. Now to see what bullets I need to order for my .40 S&W. Again ty for the eye opener.
