Hi all, a buddy has "an old Mauser" laying around, and wants to shoot it. he told me that it is a 1891 Mauser & it takes 7.65x53 ammo. I know very little about old Mauser rifles, & after a brief search on the net, have not found any 7.65x39 ammo for sale. is this ammo still available anywhere, if so, would someone please point me in the right direction? I have not seen this rifle yet, and look forward to my buddy bringing it out for a shooting session. any comments or brief info. on this rifle, given what little information I have? would this ammo. possibly be called 7.65x39 Argentine? thanks guys, A.J.

Good Afternoon A.J.,

Try www.buffaloarms.com or www.grafs.com for 7.65x53.
Argentina did adopt this cartridge in the late 1800's and did buy Mausers chambered for it.

I don't think there is a 7.65x39 cartridge. There is a 7.62x39 which is the round used in SKS or AK type weapons. It is a short and stubby looking thing compared the "conventional" looking 7.63x53.

Good Luck.

The original name for the cartridge was 7.65X53 Belgian Mauser and came into use in 1889. Was used by a number of countries in the Middle East as well as Argentina and Peru. Norma makes ammo and cases. Look at Graf & Sons or Midwayusa on the web. Should be available. I load my own for a Argentine 1891 Carbine, nice guns, but not as strong as a '98 model.
