Geez, I'm used to the 3 day delay but yesterday I got a 6 day delay! Has something changed or is this 'cause of that terrible snow storm in the mid-west?

The three day delay begins the next business day:
Wednesday- you attempt to purchase, get a "delayed" response.
Thursday- 1st day
Friday- 2nd day
Saturday- not a business day
Sunday- not a business day
Monday- 3rd day
Tuesday- "Brady law does not prohibit the dealer from transferring you the firearm on this date".

It's still a three day delay:D

First off it's not really a three-day delay, it's just a 'Delay'.
What the law says is that if the FFL does not get a 'Proceed' reply (from NICS or state point of contact) within three business days he may go ahead and complete the transfer.

Some dealers will go ahead and do the transfer after the three business days, some will wait until they get the 'Proceed' whether that is 4 days, 2 weeks, or never.

This has nothing, at all, to do with weather.

In Washington, the state handles the 'NICS' checks for handguns, long-guns still go to the FBI NICS process.

Thank you, that clears it up. Part of what threw me is the way the salesman said it, "never seen a six day delay before", then he told me I can come back Tuesday next week if I don't hear from them. Now it all makes sense.

NICS will usually give the dealer a date to complete the transfer. That is probably where the FFL got the 6 day delay from. That is most likely the date that NICS gave him.

Be glad you don't live in CA. We get a 10 day mandatory wait no matter what type of gun.
