Savage trigger question

Out of curiosity, I just took my new 10FP apart today. OMG does that stock look stupid from the inside. How much more expensive could have been to fill in the front part and make it stiffer??

Anyway, so I took a look at the trigger and it seems to have 3 adjustment screws. I just had to tinker. The brass one (attached to the spring ) is obviously controling the pull. The front one under the trigger itself seems to control the takeup. However I cant figure out what the rear hex one controls. I know this is a stupid question, but this is my first rifle with an adjustable ( such as it is ) trigger, and compared with my Mausers its down right complex.

My questions are:
1 What does that third screw do?

2 As I turk around with these screws what do I have to watch out for to make sure that I dont make the rifle unsafe? My definition of unsafe in this context is firing without me touching the trigger and safety not working. :uhoh:

Thanx guys
Loch

I've got a 10fp in .308 now, and plan on getting a .223 once I sell my AR15.

Here is the link you need to smooth up your trigger. I've just messed with the two screws and my trigger is much better. No creep and breaks like a glass rod. I plan on doing some smoothing and maybe replacing the springs soon.

Thanx guys thats exactly what I was looking for. Now, does anyone have any tricks for mesuring trigger pull without the correct tool? I am almost tempted to try a 2L plastic bottle with various amounts of water. Anyone have some better ideas?

Not sure, I go more by feel than measured weight. I sat down and gradually adjusted mine, dry firing before, during and after.

Like I said mine now breaks very cleanly.

Maybe, a portable scale to weigh fish?

If you reload, you can use bullets of know weights, and fashion a pan or cup hung from the trigger by a coat hanger or some such.

As I've said on other threads, I've had several of the Savage heavy barrel rifles and have been able to get perfectly acceptable triggers on two of them. A third was professionally adjusted and a fourth had a SharpShooter trigger installed.

As for the stock... yeah, they're pretty much junk. But shooting off a bench or with a bipod, they don't seem to effect accuracy.
