I am fascinating with falling block designs (I like uncommon firearms) and have been giving the Ruger No. 1 a serious look. I don't have an African safari trip in my immediate future, but there may be a chance to book one in the next few years. I do like the look of the Ruger No. 1's, too, and one chambered in .416 just *might* give me the push I need to go big game hunting in Africa ("But, honey, I have to go now since I have this rifle especially designed for big game..." ;) ).

Anyway, I know that there are more popular big game rifles out there such as the Winchester 70, Weatherby, etc., so I was curious as to others' experiences with the Ruger No. 1's. Thoughts and feedback on accuracy, reliability, etc., would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

Nothing wrong with a Ruger #1, I was just looking at one in .300 H&H mag in Jan. Great rifle and strong action.

However, a #1 would be the last choice I'd make for an African trip. You want something that will give you a faster second shot then a #1.

Hers is a link to a thread on Ruger #1 that was discussed on this board last week.

Hope this helps, Tentwing

I agree that Ruger number 1's are no doubt reliable and accurate.

I myself have looked into purchasing hardware for a future African hunt, and have found that most people will suggest picking up a bolt action to enable for quicker follow up shots should the need present itself.

Brands that I have looked into include CZ, Remington and Ruger. Each brand makes bolt actions in dangerous game loads. I always thought the CZ 550 Safari Magnum looked like a good pick. They make them in .375 H&H, 416 Rigby and .458 Win Mag

Good luck with your choice

Thanks, everyone, and thanks to Tentwing for pointing me to last week's post. I don't frequent the Rifle Section of THR very often, and when I did a search, I came up with a bunch of stuff that didn't seem related (my error on the keywords). After reading that thread, I realized that the #1 is a much beloved rifle, albeit with some difficulty of getting a fast second and third shot. Probably no match for a good bolt action, but the Ruger #1's are beautiful and strong and fairly accurate for big game.
