My Son bought a Taurus PT-111 Millenium today and I'm going to load for it. He bought 115 gr. Gold Dots and 115 gr. XTP-HP to work with. I'm using Longshot which has worked well for this and the 40 S&W, so I' set with the powder. My problem is I can't find a recomended COL for the 115 gr. XTP-HP. The Gold Dot is much longer in comparison to the XTP HP. The G.D. seats quite a bit deeper in the case than an XTP. Hogdon recomends 1.125" COL for the G.D. which puts it pretty deep into the case. So I'm thinking since the XTP will sit a lot more shallow, it shouldn't be a problem, but I would like to hear from ya all on that.

If you have reloaded before, you should know that you have to determine the COL for your gun.
You should take one or two empty cases and use them to set up your dies. You should always start with the longest COL that fits in your magazine (or in your cylinder). You can use these two inert rounds to verify that they feed and chamber in your gun without using live rounds and, if you save them with a label, you can use them to quickly reset your dies.
If you must have a COL to start with, try 1.160".

Hornady recommends 1.105" oal.
Thats the length that I use in my 3 S&W Performance CTR guns.
Very, very accurate with 5.6gr of LongShot.
For the GoldDot, I use 1.115" oal.
I get better accuracy with a slightly deeper seating depth which improves the cartridge concentricity (bullet run-out or "wobble".) Also, greater pull strength which improves ignition and reduces velocity variation (standard deviation).

I suggest you look at their data.

Wow, really appreciate the information. My concern was with regard to pressures as my Speer manual said that a load with a SAMMI pressure of 32,000 will jump to 62,000 with only .030" deeper seating depth than recomended. The Gold Dots were just fine at 1.125" but as you probably know, the G.Ds are a completely different bullet dimension and I didn't want get the XTPs too deep.

The Hodgdon Powder web site gives OALs for the XTP.

RFwobbly, I was just at the Hogdon site and they didn't list the 115 gr. XTP data, only Gold Dot for 115 grain. But thanks for atempt to help any way.

In all cases that I know of, the load data is always shown with the minimum recommended or the SAAMI COL. This is a "do not seat deeper" and not a "this is the ideal" listing.

The OACL used by Vihta Vouri for the 115 gr. XTP is 1.142"/29mm. This will put even less bullet into the case and it will also reduce pressure. Use a good taper crimp. that may ease your mind about OACL.;)
