I'm looking to develope a load for my .30-30 and want to use these Nosler Partition 170gr FP's for hog hunting. However I'm worried that the bullet may not perform at .30-30 velocities. Nosler says the bullets have to go a least 1800 fps others say 2000 fps is the minimum. Anyone have any experience with this?

Here's my take. The 1800 fps recommendation is for Nosler Partitions in general. The 170 grain RN was developed with the 30-30 in mind, so it may well be an exception. The best thing to do is to confirm with Nosler.
FWIW, as much as I love Partitions, at 30-30 velocities I'd just get some 170 grain Winchester Power Points and go hunting.

I think that at the lower velocity of the 30-30, the regular Power Points or Rem. Core-Lokts stay together pretty well. Its not that the Nosler won't work; it will stay together, and the front will mushroom. But it is intended to stay together into thick game at high velocity. The 30-30 just doesn't necessitate a partition style bullet because it isn't blowing apart upon impact.

If you have to have the best then load barnes X 150gr. 100% wieght retension and over 2x expansion.

I had Great performance out of 150gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip using IMR-3031. I will look up the charge I have notes somewhere, dont recall it right off.
The partition would probably perform better? I might have to try it!
Maybe even go up to 165-170 gr.?
I presume that you are using Bolt action Rifle? I used this in Marlin 336 and used a even more compressed charge in a Thompson Contender with the BT.
I used this in Marlin 336 while Deer Hunting But used only 2 Rounds - 1 in chamber 1 in Tube ( Nothing in front of 1 in tube - To prevent recoil detonation - which I hear can happen? ) I never risked it myself.
My other favorite is Winchester 748 usually with a 125 gr Hollow Point.
Independent tests showed that the 30-30 Nosler Partition penetrated less distance than Winchester Power Point and Remington Core-lokt. This was attributed to the mushroom "petals" breaking off during smashing through the test medium. The loss of these petals caused loss of bullet weight which affected momentum and penetration.
The medium velocity 170 grain bullet penetrates in straight lines with lethal results. Decades ago, all the major ammo makers perfected jacket thickness, copper jacket alloys, and amount of exposed lead for their TOP selling 30-30 cartridges.
- Does a modern hunter need Premium bullets for his 30-30 to be successful? No.
- Do careful hunters armed with 30-30 rifles topple Canadian moose, Arctic caribou, Rocky Mt. Elk, and all sizes of bears each and every year? Yes.
- Do careful hunters of truly large animals favor Premium bullets? Quantity of ammo sales say, No.
