This is for his 10th grade speech class. He is looking for sources, illustrations, true stories, etc. to cite in his report. Can anybody offer any suggestions? He needs to present arguments from both sides but intends on persuading the class that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

Perhaps amongst the pro arguments your son can mention the ability to own firearms simply for enjoyment, just like any other possession one might desire. That's what liberty is all about.

I would highlight these ideas specifically:
The use of guns for fun and sport
The use of guns for self defense
I would avoid these ideas:
Use of guns to overthrow tyranny
2 of these ideas are shared in some way by many, or at least understood. A lot of people don't understand the last one and there probably won't be time to explain adequately.

For stories:

At the bottom, if you scroll down, you can search by state. Search by your state and have him use some examples that are geographically close to home.

Careful. That logic leads to abuse in many areas.

Pretty compelling reason if you ask me.

Possibly suggest that with regards to protecting one's family against a home invasion the police are only minutes away when seconds count.

The founding fathers thought it was the second most important issue in the land.
