Baby Huey January 4, 2004, 12:23 AM I need advice. I currently have three handguns that I am looking to get rid of. I know the caveat about never getting rid of guns, that I will regret it, however I will use the money to purchase other gun(s), for a net equal effect. I purchased two of the three used, so I will probably only lose money on one (hopefully). I do not use them, and they are only three of several I currently own. Here goes:
1. Smith and Wesson 640 .38 Special. Nice gun with the older style cylinder latch and no keyhole. Rated +P+ is laser engraved on frame, visible when the cylinder is open. This gun is still tight but has scratches on the outside. Bought used cheap. Shoots very well, but I never shoot it. My wife prefers the SP-101. If I carry a j-frame, I always carry my model 60. I never warmed up to the 640, maybe I should try harder?
2. CZ-83. Also a nice gun that I bought used. It is totally reliable. If I carry an auto, I go for the Glock 19. A little big for a .380, so I bought number 3
3. Kahr MK-9. An excellent gun that I bought new. For that reason alone I almost don't want to get rid of it, and get beat up. Here is the catch. I got home today from typical Saturday errand running, and I pulled off my S&W model 60 .38 special, and two speed strips from my pockets. I haven't even bought a holster for this thing. I try to get warmed up to it, but end up with the Smith when I carry concealed, or rarely the Glock 19.
So, after wading through that mess, please leave me opinions that are relevant such as A) don't do it, you're an idiot, or B) send me your guns for extended evaluation. I'm not sure what I would get with the money, but it will definitely go to a gun fund.

Old Fuff January 4, 2004, 01:01 AM For me, this would be an easy call. You have three handguns that you don't use because you have others that better serve the purpose for which they were intended. It is unlikely they will have any particular collectors' value in the near future. By all means convert them into something that better meets your current needs.
seeker_two January 4, 2004, 01:06 AM I'm selling a 1991A1 Stainless .45ACP on consignment w/ a local gunstore. I don't shoot it much, and I'm a little bored w/ it anyway. Besides, I could use the money right now...:(
Best advice I could give you is to sell your guns rather than trade them out. You'll get more for them, and you can hold onto the money until you find something (firearm or otherwise) that you DO want...:D
P95Carry January 4, 2004, 01:17 AM Baby Huey .. selling guns seems like bad news to most of us but ........ OTOH ... if stuff is takin up space and not used for whatever reason ... why not move it on and get something you do want.
That 640 ... any pics? If you really want to move it on .... PM me - let me see a pic .. and suggest a price that i might go for!!!
cratz2 January 5, 2004, 09:12 AM Well, I might advise you to try to like the Kahr a bit more... But if the you can carry the Glock in complete comfort in most any clothing, then I guess there's really no reason for it. Around here, the used Kahrs seem to go for a pretty good chunk of change. I really don't forsee getting rid of my P9 Covert and I'd really like to add a (relatively) full-sized Kahr such as the TP9. I think they're pretty great guns. I find them to be about the most comfortable to carry guns around, very decent trigger for a striker DAO. Very reliable, and surprisingly accurate for such a small gun.
If you don't pocket carry it (so you could fire it from a pocket if need be, I'd probably get rid of the Smith.
The CZ... I'm not a big fan of larger than needed 380s. Maybe for the right person, but personally, I'd much rather have a slightly larger 9mm... Between a medium 380 and a small 9, there is no choice.
I'm not one to talk folks out of selling guns... If you have something that you have no use for, doesn't have any sentimental value and you aren't going to be too upside down on... go for it. I've bought and sold many guns and have made an overall profit. As long as you buy smart, you should be able to get out of guns without too much of a loss.
PCRCCW January 5, 2004, 05:26 PM Trust me Id never recommend selling any of them. I miss them when I do.
But If they are just taking up space, cant/dont/wont shoot them or in your opinion you screwed up buying "that damn thing" :D then be patient and sell them when you get an offer you think is fair for you.
Shoot well.
redneck2 January 5, 2004, 06:57 PM are a thing of beauty, but then, beauty is...well, you know
some are just a chunk of steel and wood (or plastic). Having gotten rid of some guns I wish I had back, and many more that I'm glad I'm rid of....
ask yourself..."can I replace it???" If it's Grandpa's 62A Winchester, the answer is "no" because this is the only one that ever belonged to him.
If it's a Glock 17, I could find a dozen today. If it's got no sentimental value, you can some close to breaking even or better, and you're not using it, dump it unless you can afford to hold onto everything you've bought.
This is the great beauty of buying used and buying right. You can piddle and trade and you won't get hurt if you buy right. Remember, you make your money when you buy, not when you sell.
Majic January 5, 2004, 08:00 PM What price are you considering for the CZ-83? I may know a buyer for you.
Baby Huey January 5, 2004, 10:05 PM Thanks for all the great replys. I have decided that since money is not the issue, I will be holding on to the MK-9, at least in the short term. It does have a role to be filled that the Smith and the CZ don't, and everything I've read says that these are great guns. I've put about 300 rounds through it and no problems, including +P hollowpoints. Recoil seems less than a j-frame, also.
As far as the others, I am thinking about $200 for the CZ and $250 for the Smith. Is this low? Like I said, these two were bought used so I'm only thinking about breaking even at this point.
I've decided that cash will go towards an NRM Colt.
