Ruger 22/45 MKIII questions about upping performance

February 19, 2011, 03:38 PM
I have an MKII 22/45 that doesn't have the Loaded Chamber Indicator or the Mag disconnect.

I just got a killer deal on a 22/45 MKIII that has the LCI and Mag Disconnect and i would like to remove them.

Is this possible?

Id like to make this a real target gun and im interested in a good trigger setup, Trimming the fat, Optics and I believe i read somewhere once that there was a panel that went over this to mimic the 1911. I know there is a RP version and i have done the 1911 grip mod on my other one but i would prefer to not dig into the frame on this one so im curious if anyone knows what grips im thinking of.

Any other upgrades i should look into?

Over on rimfirecentral there's a dedicated MKIII forum, ask those guys.

The best site you can find about the MK Rugers is Gun Talk online.
linky ( .
The host, Bullseye, has threads on the mods you are contemplating.
I have done the mag safety removal and the slingshot mod. Snicker...the trigger pull improved about 3lbs with the change and shooting about 3000rounds.
There are threads about the LCI and they show how to DIY and also list posters that will fab up the insert for you.

Basically you remove the detent on the slide stop and deburr and polish the slide stop so the stop drops with gravity when you rack the bolt. Saves wear on the slide stop and bolt by eliminating the friction and pressure on the parts when you thumb the stop under spring pressure. Also makes the gun function more like a 1911. Un-modified the only way to reduce wear is to rack the slide at the same time you lower the stop. It always felt awkward to me.
I save all the take off parts in a marked baggie so I can reinstall the parts if the gun ever needs to visit Ruger.

I did a quick write up when I removed the LCI from my MK:

Where did you get the filler piece?

Here's a quick vid I did on LCI removal. easy-peasy.

the mag safety removal is pretty straightforward also. but you then need EITHER a spacer to fill in the area on the side of the hammer (can be done with washers, I did it) or a clark hammer bushing part #517 (which does work with the MKIII trigger). the clark supposedly also removes some slop in the trigger. I just ordered one. $25 shipped from clark custom. call them. You can also use a Volquartsen bushing which is a modified/trued ruger bushing. Or there are a couple of guys who home-make them for about 10 bucks. most things I've read say if you're really concerned about a great trigger, get the Clark bushing.

You can also simply swap for a MKII hammer. save the mag disconnect guts in case you need to sell/trade the pistol you can put it back.

Most people also recommend a Volquartsen sear and trigger. I have some on the way.
Order from good prices and free shipping!

Guntalk-online pictorial how-tos are as good as it gets. Bullseye is the MAN.

also read up at rimfire central. great guys and very knowledgeable. the grip panels that go over the stock non-RP frame are made by a guy there.
