Hello,

I'm new to the forum and would like to know if there is some published load data that anyone would be able to share for 45 Win Mag. I have seen varying loads cited and want to make sure that I don't end up pulling the trigger on a grenade. Currently, I am wanting to load 230 FMJ with Blue Dot and have seen loads from 16gr all the way to 22gr with one chart stating not to exceed 20. If you have any load data you can share I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you-

I would pass on Blue Dot in the 45 Win Mag. H110 or 296 would be a better choice.

28.0gr of H110 behind a Hornady 230gr FMJ is listed in the Hodgdon #27 manual. Winchester case, CCI350 primer. 1,410fps from a 5" barrel, 29,000 CUP That's the max load. I would drop it down a bit and work up.

Blue Dot has had a sorted past with huge swings in lot-to-lot performance. That is probably why you see the numbers all over the place with that powder. It was the powder of choice back in the 80's when guys were trying to make "major" with their 38 Supers. It is also the powder that helped coin the term "Super Face".

Hornady Manual, 14th Ed., shows the following max loads for their 230 gr FMJ bullets:

Unique: 13.1 gr @1500 fps
Blue Dot: 17.5 gr @ 1600 fps
HS-7: 18.0 gr @ 1500 fps
2400: 21.8 gr @ 1550 fps
IMR 4227: 25.0 gr @ 1500 fps

I've double-checked what I've typed several times, and I'm 100% sure that the information above is what is presented the manual. That said, I'd encourage you to try to obtain your own copy so you can verify these maximum loads. I've also heard the comments about performance differences with Blue Dot that TonyRumore referred to.

ETA: The velocities referenced in the manual were with a 14" barrel T/C Contender, Winchester cases, WLP primers.
