I don't own one but my half cousin does and after she tried zapping herself in the thigh with the "black widow" model, she's not so convinced about it's abilities. She was able to stand up almost instantaneously.
With such an "endorsement" I'd rather stick to a good ole fashioned baseball bat.

Uther,
Welcome to THR!
It's possible this is a dramatic advance, but I really doubt it. Many less-lethal tools seem really great until they don't work. :what:

These devices have been reviewed in several places, where people bought them and zapped themselves. The consensus is that it provides an unpleasant sensation. If you think a bad guy will back off because you zapped him with something that makes him mildly uncomfortable, then go for it :)

Perhaps what you found is not your everyday stungun, but I allowed a female friend of mine to zap me with hers in an attempt to show her they were ineffective (and I was curious). She was sold on the belief it would reduce an assailant to a harmless quivering heap, as the advertisement on the box described.
It was a 75,000 volt model, I allowed her to shock me and continue until I could take it from her. I got over a full second jolt to my ribs before I wrenched it from her hands. I was certainly no quivering heap. It convinced her to carry pepper spray after that (though she still wouldn't apply for a CCW).
The jolt caused a nasty muscle contraction at that location that felt quite painful, but nothing disabling. Two red welts and mild muscle twitching for a few minutes at the site were the only reminder of the jolt immediately afterwards. I did feel a bit "funny", but that was due to adrenaline I'm sure.
At no time did I lose balance, coordination or piss my pants (as the sales jargon convinced her would happen).
At no time would I ever trust such a stun gun to protect a loved one's life. Perhaps a Taser packs more of a punch, and I know pepper spray is no joke, but I feel stun guns are little more than a marketing gimmick of the worst kind.
