Anyone have a good, cheap place for hog hunting in North Texas?
I've got a brother-in-law who's champing at the bit to give this a try, and it's something outside of my personal experience.
Thanks.

I know you said cheap, yet for $40 theres a few public land hunts around here. Old Sabine Bottom in Smith county(near Tyler) is 5,727 acres of hog wallows: all leagal firearms Jan.31-Mar.14, camping avail. Caddo Natl. Grasslands until Mar.7. White Oak Creek WMA(Sulphur River, watch out for bigfoot!)until Mar14. Lake Tawakoni, Pat Mayes, Cooper Lake,Big Lake Bottoms(Anderson County), and Ray Roberts all have hogs yet limit hunting to bow(usually year round) and muzzle loaders. Hope that helps.
I would also check with bottom land farmers/ranchers. Be really sincere and they may not charge you anything. especially if you dress a little 40 pounder out and give it to them.
Best of luck.

TX Public Hunting permits jumped from $40 to $48 this year. (Available anywhere you buy a license; state will subsequently mail you the maps/regs.) Still a real good deal if ya understand that very "public", especially on opening days, and if ya don't mind doing quite some driving/scouting. Chaz and I checked out a 28,000 acre wildlife management area near Matador on New Year's Day.
Each of these places will have some very specific rules and regs. - like the one mentioned above. Hog hunting there is Feb. 1 thru Feb. 15 only, archery only. We saw some signs, but obviously only able to walk a fraction of it in one day.
I've not got their permit (free with written proof of hunter ed.) in a couple of years, but recall that the Corps of Engineers at Lake Lewisville had opened up a portion of their land (near Hwy. 380 east of Denton) for feral hog, but archery only. (And subsequently had a student tell me later that he scouted it and the biggest tree in the area had a trunk diameter of only about 2". And no handguns allowed whatsoever. Broadheads only, potentially pissed off pigs and only itty-bitty trees? No thank you! ;) )
IIRC, Lewisville Corps land permits typically expire at end of February.

My boys and I are itching to go hog hunting, and were wondering if anyone knew of any areas within 2-3 hours of the Houston TX area where we may go hog hunting. We have purchased the public lands permit, but don't have the gasoline or time to look at each area. Does anyone have any ideas where we can go hog hunting with either rifle or handgun? Thanks so much in advance, Richard

48 bucks for sure, gb, I'm still not used to the new licenses....they are durable though. P_U_B_L_I_C eewwww.... WMAs can be the best and the worst at the same time. Nothing like taking a sick day(Wednesday)
and gettin primal (in thought only, this is public after all) during the first week of bow season. Just keep a cooler or two half full of ice.
As for Lewisville, use a tripod if it will keep a body in the (still green)
canopies of the cedar?mesquite?ash?locust? trees. Works for a friend of mine in Decatur.

' Looked in book a little more on "Old Sabine Bottom WMA" (north of Tyler/Lindale). Feral hog season there (all legal weapons allowed) dates above correct (Jan. 31 to March 14). Then ... interesting ... "Squirrel, Feral Hog and Furbearers" opens again May 1 to 31, but "Shotgun, .22 rimfire and muzzleloader" only.
FWIW, slugs seem to be OK most places, but buckshot a big no-no to even have in possession on these places ...

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I'm still digging around. If I was rich, I could find some great hunting nearby, but I doubt that my brother-in-law has half a grand to drop on a hog, and I know for a fact that I don't.

Anybody ever heard of the M.Y.Ranch? They offer $75 day hunts for hogs, no kill fee. That's not much more expensive than the WMA hunting fee.

Never heard of the MY; $75 is a bit too steep for me. The $48 fee for WMAs
is a onetime fee, good for the entire year BTW.

Yes, good point that it's a season-long fee.
I should've made it clearer that my brother-in-law is from out of state, and on his next visit we'll probably only have one day to give the hog hunt a try.
But that's no reason for me to limit myself, is it? As I said, I've never hog hunted, but I might learn to like it, and that $48 would seem pretty cheap.
