I have a doublestar ar15 that I am trying to get the 4 way stock off of to replace it with an a2 stock. I am having a problem It looks like there is a pin in between the plate and the nut that needs to come off. Are there some that are not ment to come apart? I would really like to be able to swap it out with the a2. I guess I could drill it out but I would rather not tear up the stock thats on it. Any Ideas would be greatly appriciated
Thanks \

Thats not a pin, it is properly "peened" into place. Which basically means taking a center punch and hammer and swelling out the metal there to make it stay. You may have to lightly drill it to remove some of the excess metal. Dont go all the way through though. Just enough to free it up. Then just a little elbow grease with your AR armorers tool.

Yep, it's just hit with a punch to hold it. That's more than normal though, wow.
As advised, you gotta just crank the living heck out of it with a proper wrench and probably a breaker bar on it. It will come loose.

I don't know for sure but, I would take a closer look with a magnifying glass. Just to make sure that it is in fact staked and that it is not a set screw. Some use an Allen screw as a lock.

Yep, what you have there is one heck of a staking job. A little overkill.
You can drill the material out, or use a punch to push some of the end plate material out of the relief in the castle nut. Or, you can use a big ol' cheater bar and lean on it until the castle nut turns loose. All viable options.

You might be able to use a punch or small chisel to pound the metal out of the encroachment into the nut. Looks like they peened it with a 20 pound sledge.

Yeah, geez. I wonder what they hit that with. That's a heck of a staking job. I wonder what the gas key looks like.

I had the same problem and didnt have an armores tool and still got it done. This what I did:
Take a dremel and put on the thinest cut off wheel you have, then turn it on full blast and cut the staking in half. Cut paralel to the line that is made were the castle nut meets the end plate. Then I just put a punch into one of the "teeth" of the castle nut and hit it with a hammer in the proper direction to loosen it. It worked just fine, I basically drove it off with a hammer and punch after I dremeled through the staking.

I just removed one of mine the other night and I used the method described here. Take a pin punch and hammer, and you can tap the majority of the metal back out of the gap on the castle nut. Then, depending on the quality of your stock wrench, you should be able to unscrew the nut. If it is still stubborn, you can use the method described by AR27 above, i.e. put a rod of some sort against one of the teeth and whack it a few times with a hammer to get it to start to turn. You may mangle your castle nut a little bit, but it will only be cosmetic and in any case they are cheap to replace.

Thanks again for all the replies .I took a drill and ever so lightly cleaned it up an it came right off . I like the feel of the a2 stock and I can switch it back and forth pretty easy. I did forget to put the small spring back in before I put it back togther and found out the hard way what its for. It took me am hour to find the back pin when it fell out. But I did find it.
Thanks again
Dan
