what barrel length will give you the full potential the .308 has to offer? i've been looking at a couple of rifles which one would give you the best results in long range shooting? is 26" overkill?

Depends upon application.

I'm shooting a 308 with a 30" barrel which still seems to produce meaningful FPS gains over 24 and even 26" tubes.

I'm still deep in load development but I already have loads pushing 175g HPBT's north of 2850fps and 150's above 3k

No argument with R.W. Dale, depending on powder choice 30" and more will produce some additional velocity. The point at which more barrel starts slowing the bullet instead of accelerating it is probably in the 35-40" range, again depending on load.

My 2 cents - for most uses other than F-Class, 22-24" is all that's useful, and for most shooting inside of 600 yards, 18" is quite adequate and much handier.
