CNN host explains wife's gun arrest
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- CNN host Lou Dobbs explained Thursday a handgun found in wife Debi's purse by authorities at a Newark airport had been there since a trip to Vermont last fall.

His 49-year-old wife was released without bail about two hours after her arrest Wednesday afternoon when she was en route to board a Continental Airlines flight to Florida, said airport spokesman Tony Ciavolella.

In a phone call to Don Imus's morning radio show, which is simulcast on cable's MSNBC, the CNN Moneyline anchorman said his wife is "embarrassed" and "regrets the inconvenience caused all of the enforcement officers" at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Her two teenaged children, who were travelling with her, boarded the flight. Dobbs told Imus she later joined him in Florida.

The family lives in Sussex, N.J.

The charge against her -- unlawful possession of a weapon -- carries a penalty of three to five years in prison, although that's unlikely for a first-time offender.

The gun she was carrying, a .25-calibre semiautomatic handgun, was confiscated by Port Authority Police.

CNN's public-relations office said the network had no comment on the arrest.

On the radio, though, Dobbs described it as a "tough experience" for his wife. And like many of Imus's guests, Dobbs joked about the topic at hand.

"Thank God you're OK," Imus said.

"Where are you?"

"I'm on vacation," Dobbs said.

"But you're safe, right?" Imus asked.

Said Dobbs: "How could you be more safe when you have a wife who's willing to protect you at all costs?"

Yeah, I happend to hear that interview on Imus' show. He's a tool, Don Imus -- complaining loudly, "what is your wife doing running around with an unlicensed gun?!"

It'd be nice if Mr. Dobbs would be alittle more forceful about the fact that he owns a gun for self-defense, instead of whinning how embarrased he is

A .25? Geez, will the prosecution add a count of "Insufficiency of caliber"?

Hey now! A .25 will, as they said so sagely, "PUT YOUR EYE OUT!";)

What kind of responsible gun ownership would allow a weapon to sit in some luggage since a previous trip w/o knowing or remembering where it was? What happens if they're attacked and need the weapon? "Um, let's see, I think I had it over here...nope, let's try over here....dang! where did I leave that gun?"

1. I've never forgotten a gun in my life, and can't imagine I ever will.

2. Every law-abiding citizen should have the legal right to travel anywhere, any time, for any reason with any firearm he or she owns.
