Hello Folks!

I´ve found this rare colt 1911 magazine. It looks like a early 1911 lanyard loop magazine to me, but check the back side. Any idea?

Thank you,

Alex

That looks like a VERY early 1911 Colt magazine.
These were known as a "key hole" magazine.

- - - with dfariswheel. I believe the "keyhole" was intended to allow a small amount of flexation, to prevent cracking at the corners. This was before they "perfected" the exact degree of heat treating to compromise between hardness needed for durability and ductility necessary to brevent breaking under hard usage.

I believe that at one time this particular magazine was used with a snap-end lanyard or the like - -Note the wear pattern to either side of the holes.

It LOOKS as if someone cut off the lanyard loop and then punched out the stub ends. I believe the holes would show more distortion if the loop had been pulled loose or broken off due to hard use.

Also, I doubt that this magazine has seen a lot of hard use in the field. The rust spots appear to be due to neglect more than use. The only actual wear pattern I can see is the lanyard snap wear on the finish.

How's THAT for some deductive reasoning, based upon insufficient evidence, Sherlock Holmes fans? :D

Best,
Johnny
