1975, age 16...paid for my first 1911 with earned money.
Friendly, Don't Fire!
March 7, 2011, 07:25 PM
Never, and I don't miss a thing.
March 7, 2011, 07:40 PM
bought a ruger security six in 1981. then a S&W 622 in 1985.
Then I bought 3 1911's. One of each size.
Sold the ruger and all 3 colts. Still have the S&W 622.

They came relatively late in my handgun collection... They were pricey and heavy and I wasn't interested in the venerable 1911 at first, but have since become a fan.
Got my first one literally by accident. Was selling washer and dryer and posted a "for sale or trade" advert. The 'buyer' offered a $450 Springer GI model. Worked flawlessly and the trade was made. I came out on top I would say!
Got my second 1911 by accident. Called on a 'rifle for sale' ad. Turns out I didn't want the rifle. On a whim, I asked if the seller had anything else. He had a near new 1911 with the unit I had deployed with from the 101st; he bought it for his friend but never delivered it. I picked it up for less than 1/2 price!
Got my third in a trade. Again, by pure luck and accident. Very favorable trade. Very very very favorable trade. At the height of the AWB scare in 2009, I swapped an AK47 for a $1300 1911 in pristine condition with a butter trigger and all the upgrades you could want!!! And it's a beaut!
I really like the 1911 now!
March 7, 2011, 08:08 PM
My first was a revolver, 357. I always wanted a slab-side since as far back as I can remember, saved up and bought one, it is still my HD go to gun. It just feels soooo perfect in my hand. Thank you JMB!!

When I was about four, I was in the local hardware store with my mom, and there was a toy set of soldier stuff. I put my finger in the plastic, and of course my mom had to buy it, and, surprise! I got the set for my birthday. It had a canteen and belt, and a green plastic 1911. I remember playing with it, and wondering what the little extra things on the sides were. The plug and slide stop were checkered, the grips had the diamond patterns, it had a click click trigger and hammer. I suppose at some level, it got under my skin from an early age.
When I got out of the army, I bought a Taurus T-92 from a friend of mine, and I traded a guitar for a Auto-Ordnance 1911. If I hadn't had a terrible Sigma, I would say it was the worst gun I ever owned. (This is early 90s vintage.) Terrible trigger, would only work with half the magazines I bought, the front sight fell out. It was a long time before I tried another one, a Colt 1991. It was ok,but nothing magical. I had a Para P-12 for a while, I remember liking it, but it was a time when I was so broke I didn't get to shoot it a lot. None of them were as good as my Kimber.
March 7, 2011, 08:31 PM
I've had Glocks, Rugers, Berettas, S&Ws, etc. I picked up an RIA Tactical on a whim because of the great price. It has become my favorite pistol. I now only have my M&P40 (I always prefered th M&P to my Glocks) and a Bersa T380 that my girlfriend likes to shoot. I have sold off my Glocks and a Beretta and I'm now looking to buy a new Compact 1911.
March 7, 2011, 08:33 PM
1st pistol I ever bought, plan to always have at least one on hand.
March 7, 2011, 08:37 PM
always wanted one but could never save up enough money until i could get one (car projects or other guns) until i fell into a awesome deal. got a taurus 1911 for basically $50 and now is my favorite gun to shoot and carry.
March 7, 2011, 08:58 PM
I just purchased my first 1911 - springfield loaded this past x-mas. I have always had poly frame pistols and wanted to try another type of pistol and the 1911 is a must have in everyones collection! I have to say I am very happy w/ my purchase!
March 7, 2011, 08:59 PM
Bought my first 1911 in 1972. It was a GI gun that was probably stolen in SE Asia.
I paid $80 for it.
March 7, 2011, 09:09 PM
I don't own one, though I do have a Star Model B and I might get one of the GSG .22 1911's since it's the 100th anniversary this year (hey, any excuse to buy a new toy; I needed a full-size .22 semi-auto anyway).
March 7, 2011, 09:10 PM
Never was much of a "handgun guy" till 3yrs. ago. In 1980 I bought a S&W M28-2 which I never shot. Just bought it to help out a friend that was moving out of state and didn't want it.
I now have 11 handguns and 2 are 1911s. Both were bought in Dec. 2010
March 7, 2011, 10:39 PM
I bought it as my first handgun and had it two years until I sold it to buy a K frame. I still have K frames and I have 1911s off an on. I would sell any 1911 before any of my revolvers or Hi Powers.
March 7, 2011, 11:04 PM
First handgun I bought, back in 1982 or so.
I've had about 25 1911s since then. There is one on my hip as I type this.
March 7, 2011, 11:14 PM
Was the first firearm I ever bought. I wasn't going to buy one because of the price, but I found a great deal on it used. Absolutely loved it and had to have it.
March 8, 2011, 12:03 AM
Hmmmm, let me see. The 1911s in my collection started with a Randall A131 bought from a friend, the fourth pistol in my collection. Then another friend had a WWII Ithaca 1911-A1 and was in need of a few bucks, I just couldn't say no. They were followed by Ballester Molina, a Sistema Colt 1927 and a Ballester Rigaud. I guess I need one more to make an even half dozen.
March 8, 2011, 12:05 AM
I started out last year with an RIA CS Tactical (I still have it) and I just recently picked up an Iver Johnson Trojan. I'm tossing around the idea of trading the RIA for something different, though.
March 8, 2011, 12:07 AM
About 3 years ago it was my 5th handgun.
March 8, 2011, 12:11 AM
Missing option: Never.
March 8, 2011, 12:19 AM
The full size 1911 has been the best CCW gun I've ever owned.
March 8, 2011, 12:29 AM
Forgot to add the never option and don't know how to edit ! Sorry
The question is geared toward people who have a 1911. That was what I was curious about. If you never owned one then it's not part of your collection! Ha
March 8, 2011, 12:38 AM
My Dad God bless him got one DCM 45 marked by FC through the NRA for around $12.50. The gun was sold as unserviceable. The slide was loose which I tightened it up using wooden blocks and a vise and with patience it wored fine. I cast bullets and loaded for it using Herter's equipment. Being young and stupid, I could hit and keep the bullets in the black on an old Military 5V target at 100 yds aiming at 12 oclock at the top of the target frame. Sitting, resting the gun butt on my knee. Shooting down a canyon on our Ranch in Oklahoma I was not impressed with the drop of the bullet. Now days I have added a Gold Cup 68, Springield 3" 1911A1,Springfield 1911A1 with Bomar Ramp. I made a parts gun with parts from Tom Forrest abd a frame from Sarco for a carbine. All and all I really love the 1911. Now I am in process of disperseing my collection to my Sons. Gosh its been fun. BUT I AINT DONE YET!!!
March 8, 2011, 12:55 AM
Got mine right off the bat--the 1911 was the best fit to my hand.
March 8, 2011, 01:43 AM
I was issued one.
Then after moving to the states, it was my 3rd iteration.
March 8, 2011, 04:24 AM
I'll call it early in my collection since im only 24, but I just ordered my first, A 60 year old Argentine Sistema, made in Argentina off Colt leased equipment. It has no finish, but the Frame, Slide, Magazine, and Barrel all match. It'll give me something to work on.
It's probably my 7th or 8th pistol and 20th gun altogether. I've lost count.
March 8, 2011, 05:36 AM
3rd. Bought it in 73 and still have it.:)
March 8, 2011, 09:33 AM
I got my first one, a Randall Lemay in the early 80's and now count over 20 on my collection. Nothing better!
March 8, 2011, 09:41 AM
My second handgun purchase was a 1911, a Kimber Eclipse Target II to be exact, I still have it, but it's far from 100% reliable and is going to be my base gun for a build. I've in the interim acquired a number of 1911s and don't see any reason to stop.
March 8, 2011, 09:47 AM
The 1911 was the third gun in the stable IIRC.
March 8, 2011, 10:01 AM
Tied for first and second, I got a Glock 19 and an Argentine Sistema 1911 made in 1956 on my 21st birthday in trade for a Stag M4rgery I had.
March 8, 2011, 10:07 AM
I guess my first one was the second handgun I bought. Maybe the third, I'm not sure. It was a Colt, GM in satin nickel, with Pachmeyer grips. I got when I got bit by the IPSC bug back in the 80's I guess. A lot of people in the club used stock/near stock guns back then. I shot it quite a bit back then. Good gun.
Traded/sold it off a couple of years later when I got interested in something else. I didn't get another one until four or five years ago. This one is a Colt 1991A1 Commander. I don't shoot that one very much.
March 8, 2011, 11:17 AM
My first handgun was a RIA GI-spec 1911. I put a couple thousand rounds of whatever cheap ammo I could get my hands on through it and had a lot of fun. I later sold it after buying a couple of polymer framed .45 pistols. Both of those polymer framed .45s are now sold and I have a Springfield loaded lightweight 1911 that I won't part with. The 1911 is in my opinion the best balanced and best shooting handgun around.
March 8, 2011, 12:07 PM
Had a bunch of Ruger SA revolvers over the years...the 1911 was the second autoloader handgun...first was the KP-90 Ruger, then SA "Champion" Model 4" 1911, next up was the SA 'GI-45' and then the MKII Ruger .22
March 8, 2011, 12:24 PM
I had many handguns before the 1911. I got the 1911 that I had always wanted. It is sold now. I am not a fan of 1911's and do not plan to own more in the future.
March 8, 2011, 02:42 PM
Interesting results. Either was very beginning of collection or later on.
March 8, 2011, 03:32 PM
About 1972. My first handgun. I have not been without one, or more, since then. I doubt I ever will be without one.
March 8, 2011, 03:39 PM
My first one was about 1965.
My first handgun was a Ruger Standard .22 Auto in 1958.
My second was a 1917 S&W .45 ACP revolver in 1961.
I bought my first 1911 because I was expecting to be sent to Vietnam, and I wanted to practice with the GI issue service pistol first!!
That turned into a stent with an Army AMU unit building and shooting 1911 match pistols for two years.
Never been without a 1911 or three since.
March 8, 2011, 03:53 PM
My 1911 was my 2nd handgun purchase. My first was a S&W 642 J Frame with CT grip. After that I went looking for the handgun that fit my hand the best, and that ended up being the Kimber Ultra Carry II. That same day, the gun store was expecting a shipment of six Ultra Crimson Carry II handguns (which were a brand new model at the time), and told me I could have one of those for the same price as the Ultra Carry II.
I said, "O.K.".
None of those guns ever made the showroom as they were all snapped up before they even arrived.
March 8, 2011, 04:04 PM
Don't have one yet, but I do love them and want one eventually.
March 8, 2011, 04:58 PM
My first handgun ever was a surplus Remington Rand 1911 that I bought in 1965, just before being discharged from the Air Force. It's worth a whole lot more now than what I paid for it then. Wish I still had it. :(
March 8, 2011, 07:09 PM
Actually, it was a gift from my Dad, s/n 70G2076 followed by the famous Ruger .22 semiauto @ $47.50.:neener:
March 8, 2011, 09:01 PM
First handgun I ever bought, at McBrides in Austin, Texas, in 1967 (I was 22). Colt commercial frame that had been Parkerized and mated with a Remington Rand slide, NM barrel, and target sights. I still have the gun, although I've since replaced the slide with a proper Colt one.
March 8, 2011, 09:06 PM
Mine was way past 6+ guns....I bought one just for a different gun to reload for.
March 8, 2011, 10:02 PM
rcmodel, AMU unit...way cool. That must have been some experience. I tip my hat to all AMU guys. I had a 45 built once by an AMU armorer. He worked on the rifle side but wanted to try his hand at the 1911. He sold it to start a business.
Bought mine after a considerable number of revolvers were bought and shot. Then Dad handed his down to me. I shot it some here, some there, accurized it, shot bullseye with it. Got involved in the sihlouette game and put it aside except for change of pace shooting. Then I tried my hand at some of the speed games using a 1911 instead of the revolver.
Now the 1911's are a passion. Held in the same reverence as the 44 Rugers.
March 8, 2011, 10:21 PM
The GI 1911A1 was my third handgun. Bought it in 1961 NIB from the government, for $17. Still have it.
March 9, 2011, 12:00 AM
My 13th birthday/christmas my brother gave me his 1918 vintage 1911 (no A1) as just prior to that he got his new DCM Ithaca 1911A1. I have since put on a new slide and replaced Sears, springs, hammer and other parts but kept the originals.
I want to vote in this poll pretty bad. I've made a pledge that a 1911 in .45 will be my next handgun purchase. In which case, it'll be 4th.
March 9, 2011, 03:58 AM
I had been wanting to add a 1911 to my collection for years, but kept finding other guns to buy (talking myself out of it?). Two years ago, when I got my CCW, I decided a 1911 was going on my hip. As luck (?) would have it, a friend of mine had his CCW app rejected. He already bought a Kimber procarry II, after the rejection, he couldn't stand the sight of the new gun and sold it to me for $300. I've since added two more, and would like to keep adding them to the arsenal.
March 9, 2011, 04:45 AM
The 1911 entered my collection early and left early. Pretty little piece of poo that it was.
March 9, 2011, 08:22 AM
Pretty little piece of poo that it wasThat's awesome, despite being a big 1911 fan. :)
March 9, 2011, 12:13 PM
The poll doesn't have an entry for me...
#1, but it wasn't purchased, it was given to me. :)
March 9, 2011, 01:10 PM
My first handgun was a Colt 1991A1 when I turned 21. That feels like ages ago. I remember when I bought it I paid less than $600 for it new.
March 9, 2011, 06:26 PM
About 4 yrs or so ago, before that I was mainly a revolver guy.
Now I own 4 1911's and shoot them more than the revolvers.
March 9, 2011, 06:44 PM
It was my first pistol I ever bought that I intended to compete with. But it was my third thru about 50th pistol I bought. I can say I have bought more 1911s than any other gun period.
March 9, 2011, 09:53 PM
after buy and sold many handguns, I finally realized that none of them are really special until I bought a 9mm 1911, now I have two G17s and two 1911s, one in 45 and one in 9mm.
March 9, 2011, 11:21 PM
First hand gun I ever purchased was a Norinco 1911A1
March 9, 2011, 11:32 PM
Aug. 1974 and have always keep 1 or more ever since.
March 10, 2011, 03:20 PM
I have bought two 1911's the first was back in 2 or 3 years ago it was a Rock Island. The last one was a Taurus PT-1911 AR it was last year. The reason I sold the Rock Island is it was becoming unreliable due to the fact that the metal is very weak, the internal parts were wearing too quickly, and making the gun not function plus it didn't have an accessory rail. I was wondering if, my friend should get rid of his Jennings Nine. I will say that I think he has never shot the pistol. We however noticed that it has been stamped (by the facotry) with x's in the slide. My thinking was it was supposed to be a .380, but then decided the last minute to change it to 9mm. I was wondering if it was like a coin that has been double stamped, in that it is a collectable??? Any information would be appreciated.
March 10, 2011, 03:54 PM
My 3rd handgun.
In 1980s I was a Small Arms Repairman assigned to 18th Airborne Corps. Ft. Bragg N.C.
I was complaining to a couple of buddies from the A.M.U. that I didn't have a pistol.
They gave me a bag of parts consisting of everything except a frame fro a 1911 handgun.
I bought an Auto Ordnance through a Fayetteville gun shop and put everything together.
30 years later and I still have that gun though it has been rebuild several times.
March 10, 2011, 05:21 PM
I had several handguns before I bought a 1911.
At the time I shot and trained with a Sig 229. Many of the guys I shot and trained with shot 1911s. I asked one of them what the allure was over this 1911 thing. He let me put about 50 rounds through his, and I really liked the trigger.
I decided to get one of my own and train with it for about 6 months to see if I could get used to it. It took. I stopped training with the Sig, and finally sold it. But I am completely sold on the 1911.
March 10, 2011, 06:56 PM
Bought and traded maybe ten or twelve before I got the Springer Champ Loaded. I'll likely hold on to this one.
March 10, 2011, 07:07 PM
Mine was 6+. I have three of them. A taurus, a springfield loaded, and a Kimber. They are nice.
However, they'll go away before I am ever without a polymer pistol or a 4inch 357 revolver.
March 13, 2011, 01:48 PM
Geez, don't remember just when, but somewhere in the late 70's. In the early 80's, met my first Randall. I now own all 7 of the "common" RH Randall's in .45, and one LH Randall - and tryin' to find the rest!
Other 1911's? Sheesh....IIRC, all told I own 27 or 28 of 'em....if ya count the (3) Colt Mustangs an' (2) Sig P238's!:)
March 13, 2011, 05:53 PM
First one I had was issued in 1964. Bought my own, an old Colt, in 1967. Had a little work done that cost me only a bottle of Jack Daniel's. That old Colt was super...Big regrets: first, selling it. However, raising three kids who all liked to eat demanded some different priorities. Second big regret was not sending it off to the late Armand Swenson for his legendary accuracy and reliability package. (If I had done that, I might have been more creative in finding other ways to feed those kids!:-) Now, have myself a nice Colt Commander in .45 and waiting until my favorite gunsmith gets caught up on his backlog. He is presently taking no more work....(And no, I will not tell you his name until after he gets my pistol done!)
March 13, 2011, 08:03 PM
Just purchased my first 1911 (Remington 1911 R-1) in January. Have owned 30+ handguns previously. Obviously, I don't become emotionally attached to my guns and no, I don't name them. :neener:
March 13, 2011, 08:06 PM
1988, Colt Delta Elite bought for my 21st birthday. I'd had handguns before but they were borrowed from relatives. The 1911 was the first one I bought myself.
Ordered it from a small town dealer where I grew up and it sat there for 2 weeks waiting on my birthday. Still have it. Not much original left but the slide and frame, everything else has been changed out at least once. Still my favorite.
March 13, 2011, 08:30 PM
All of my early handgun purchases were revolvers, both single and double action models. Back then Colt Government and Commander models were hard to come by, as well as being somewhat more expensive than most S&W and Ruger revolvers. I did have a friend who was into M1911's; usually had a Colt Combat Commander or a Government on hand, in .38 Super or .45ACP. I always liked the feel and balance of the Combat Commander. It wasn't long afterwards that I had to have one and I've been shooting and enjoying them ever since.
March 13, 2011, 08:33 PM
1st pistol bought was a Para P16-40, have had a little over a dozen 1911s since then. I no longer have the Para, but still have a nice stable of 1911s.
March 14, 2011, 01:23 PM
Wanted something for back-up for hog hunting and home defense. I did the research and came up with the .357 mag (S&W 686+). I always liked the 1911, but never really felt the need for additional handguns.
Needless to say I must have been a carrier for the handgun bug because I got a 1911 with my Christmas money this past new year.
Springfield GI.45 Champion
March 14, 2011, 01:32 PM
Just recently, came across an add on PAFOA for a Kimber Tactical Pro II that was a really good deal on a great looking gun. Till then, I'd not really thought much about getting a 1911 style handgun. But I can honestly say now that I've got my first one, I will be getting another one. Just need to find the right deal on the right gun. Kinda leaning towards a Kimber SIS..........
March 14, 2011, 08:36 PM
Was my first center fire pistol A Colt Combat Commander a welcome back to America present to my self 1972 I still have to day along with many other 1911's
March 14, 2011, 08:37 PM
it was my 4th gun over all.
1st handgun. I bought it on my 21st b-day. The first day I was eligable to buy a handgun.
March 15, 2011, 12:49 PM
First post:) The week before i turned 21 i bought a nib E-Nickle Colt series 70 in 45acp, and though i've been through many others in my time, thats the one i still own and will never sell....great forum.Best regards, Mike.
March 15, 2011, 01:00 PM
I finally added a 1911 to my collection last week - at the ripe old age of 46 with a fairly good collection of semi-auto's. It was a combination of a buddy selling a Springfield Loaded with only 100 rounds through it at a very reasonable price and me finally getting over what a piece of junk the one I qualified with in Basic was. :)
March 15, 2011, 02:17 PM
There is no 1911 in my arsenal.
March 15, 2011, 04:52 PM
My first centerfire pistol was a Colt series 80 1911 in .40 S&W that my dad gave to me when I was 15. Still have it, still shoot the crap out of it.
April 3, 2011, 09:56 PM
First pistol--Colt Delta Gold Cup. Lightly used with box, manual, tools and 2 mags for $600. A few years ago, that is!
April 3, 2011, 11:37 PM
Wow, Chuck. That Gold Cup must be awesome! You joined the forum over 2 years ago and just made your first post about!
April 3, 2011, 11:39 PM
My first pistol was an XD45 Compact (I had been familiar with the Glocks so the XD wasn't a big jump for me) followed by a Nagant revolver (cheap and fun). I'll be adding a 1911 this month. I've got a Cimarron 1911 lined up and so all that's left is finalizing my arrangements for a transfer. I'm very excited.
Marlin 45 carbine
April 3, 2011, 11:43 PM
when I sent my Colt issue back from 'Nam.
claimed I lost it overboard in a ff. actually took it apart and sent it home in 'souvenirs'.
April 3, 2011, 11:44 PM
Hopefully before the year is out!
April 4, 2011, 12:06 AM
My Grandfather gave me my first handgun, a Bersa Thunder .380. However, prior to that I was planning on buying my own, and it was going to be a 1911. I ended buying a Springfield G.I., so you can say that it is the first pistol I bought. The Springfield wasn't perfect, but I was bitten by the 1911 bug anyway.
I purchased my second 1911 last year, a Colt 1991 NRM, which has become my favorite handgun. It also won't be the last Colt 1911 I buy, as I now pretty much want one of everything they make. I'll likely be buying a New Agent later this year.
April 4, 2011, 12:35 AM
1. XDm in .40sw
2. P99c QA in 9mm
3. MC Operator in .45acp
I shoot all of them well, less than 3.5 inch groups at 75 feet with less than 1.5 seconds between shots. The 1911 though is sub 2 inch groups and has been since day one. It is a bit picky about magazines, but the two it came with work flawless. The mil-spec colt mags I have seem to seat a bit high for that first round and like to jam, they run fine otherwise.
April 4, 2011, 12:43 AM
First handgun I purchased, my grandfather always told me 'If you can only have one, well, you know what it should be.'
April 4, 2011, 09:54 AM
My very first gun was a 1911, it was "payment" for watching my buddies house for a week.
Give me a 1911 for sleeping on your bed, eating your food, watching your TV, and feeding your dogs?
April 4, 2011, 11:38 AM
My first 1911 was my 3rd handgun...first...Glock 19, Second S&W 686+, third, Kimber Custom II.

First was a P89. The day I turned 21. It was used and has been my go to gun for bashing around the woods. Second was a P230 for the wife. Third was a Browning Buckmark. What a POS. Sent back to the factory twice. Sold it to go for gun number 5 which was a Kimber CDP Pro. Fourth was a SA XD V10. I refuse to keep a gun that is not reliable. My most recent purchase was a Walther P22. With all the talk online, I did not have high hopes, but it has been 100% for me with the exception of 2 duds that I even attempted to fire through my Ruger Mark II with no success. There have been others since. The Buckmark was the only one I sold. Sometimes I regret it, sometimes I don't.
April 4, 2011, 07:41 PM
Not old enough to buy my own yet....but when that magical age of 21 gets here the 1911 will follow shortly :)
April 4, 2011, 08:01 PM
Picked up my Rock Island 4" today. I'm 27 and it's my 5th handgun.
April 4, 2011, 09:25 PM
I haven't ever owned one yet, the closest I've come was when my ex had a Para P-10: great little gun. I'll get around to a 1911, but they aren't going anywhere and I don't know yet what configuration I want to get so it's on the back burner for now.
April 5, 2011, 11:39 PM
I think it was the seventh handgun that I bought, picked one up in a gun shop one day never having touched one before and I had to have it.
April 6, 2011, 12:22 AM
First pistol, 1972, and any other pistol I buy for other reasons than combat, as I feel the 1911 is the epitome of the perfect combat handgun.
April 6, 2011, 12:48 AM
Over the years I've CCW'd everything from a Colt Pony Pocket Lite .380, a Berretta Cheetah 85, .380, a S & W 642 .38 +P, Glocks G19, G23, G27, and a G30. At one time or another I thought each of these was the perfect CCW gun for me. They were until I was introduced to a Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911, 5' in Dec. 2010. My FFL said every gun gatherer should own a 1911...then commenced to sell me the R.I.A. No regrets. For me it's the best carry gun and most accurate shooting pistol I have. In my Minotaur holster it's very comfortable to carry all day and conceals nicely even with my shirt tucked in the belt. I have confidence in this pistol after putting many rounds of all kinds of loads through it. Best part...it cost $492.00 before fees.
April 6, 2011, 11:38 PM
Very first! 21 years old Springfield Armory Mil Spec 1911. Nothing special, but man do I love it!
April 6, 2011, 11:49 PM
Its been some time. Springfield V-16, 6" .45 Super.
April 7, 2011, 05:11 AM
First pistol I ever purchased. And the only one I sold. (I do regret it, but I'm not in a hurry to buy another.)
April 7, 2011, 06:14 AM
Not soon enough. The 1911 is a superb design. There is a reason a 100 year old design is still very popular.
April 7, 2011, 11:34 AM
Let's see, starting at 13 years of age.
20 Ga. single shot shotgun
Armalite AR-7 .22 rifle
Ruger MKI .22 pistol
Raven .25 auto
Tech 9 9mm
.45 Colt Government
IT'S BEEN ALL :D:D:D:D SINCE THEN.
April 16, 2011, 10:07 PM
First was a S&W 686 357mag in 1992....
Second was a NEF 22lr revolver in 1992..
Third was a Taurus PT99 9 mil in 1993..
Forth was a Colt 1991A1 commander late 1993...
April 17, 2011, 09:26 PM
It was far from the first handgun I bought... and then left the collection soon after. I tried another a year or two later, and again sold it soon after.
Occasionally I think about getting another just to have one, but it isn't worth it.
April 18, 2011, 01:42 AM
I didn't like the 1911 for a long time because I thought it didn't fit my hand very well. But, I eventually bought one just to have an example in my collection. Once I started shooting it, I started liking it more and more. I only have one 1911 right now, but have owned several, and I'm planning to buy a semi-custom carry 1911 very soon.
April 18, 2011, 01:45 AM
I'd shot a .22 revolver and a .44-40, both belonging to my Grandad when I was a kid. When a teenager, I discovered the 1911 via my Dad. Been hooked ever since, going on 30 years now.
April 19, 2011, 02:28 AM
Not yet, but it's next, so that'll be 6+. I'd get one sooner but I've got two problems. My taste is expensive, and I need to shoot a gun before I buy one. I don't happen to bump into many people with Dan Wesson's around town.
April 19, 2011, 04:42 PM
My first ever purchase was a Taurus that I immediately returned for a Springfield XD....After getting into firearms, the next pistol I purchased was a Rock Island 1911. Still have the RIA and currently have only 1911s in my pistol collection
April 25, 2011, 03:27 PM
First 1911 purchased Friday. Kimber pro CDP 2..
April 25, 2011, 05:13 PM
Great responses all. I'm looking to get a DW CCO Bobtail or Vbob soon...!
April 25, 2011, 05:20 PM
I've never owned one. Whenever I consider a 1911 I always talk myself out of it...There are a variety of reasons that I decline to share, as I am sure they will ignite a hellstorm of critisism.
April 25, 2011, 06:46 PM
Last tuesday was my 21st birthday, I went and bought a Springfield loaded 1911 in stainless steel. Waiting on my wilson combat mags and desantis speed scabbard. Have winchester pdx 230 gr hollow points as my carry. Love the gun, have wanted a 1911 for years and I picked mine up first thing my 21st. :)
April 25, 2011, 09:10 PM
That's one nice birthday gift to yourself, Unbound1990.
April 26, 2011, 05:07 AM
There isn't an option for "It hasn't"
The closest I come is a Ballester-Molina but that's sort of an unholy wedding of 1911 and Star B.
May 12, 2011, 07:19 PM
As soon as I was able to afford one ... I think 1985 ?.. fell in love with them and never looked back!
May 12, 2011, 08:18 PM
My 4th gun, right after finding out that the wife did not like the Sig P232 SL 380acp nor did I thru 1450 rounds and when the new SA EMP SAO 9mm 1911 came out, sold the Sig, bought the EMP 1911 and both the wife and I have not been disappointed, far from it, now, with7k flawless rounds thru it in the past years.
There will be a full size 1911/45 one day, just has to be..
One of the_perfect platforms IMHO, not to mention the best trigger in the business.
May 12, 2011, 09:44 PM
It is my sixth Ruger and further down the list on hand guns! 12+
The reason I bought it is: It's a Ruger!
I had a thought of getting on but the American made ones were to much money!
May 14, 2011, 01:49 AM
A 1911 was my second pistol, first got a Ruger .22 Mark I then a Colt Series '70 Government Model - both in 1976. Then a mixed parts shooter P08 Luger, then a S&W Model 19. Nice string of handguns in about a two year span! Still shoot them today.
May 14, 2011, 02:11 AM
1987, first pistol was a 1911, a Vega....the biggest POS 1911 ever.
A year later, had a race gun built from a Remington, then roughly 9 (Colts mostly, a couple of Springfields and another Remington) followed within two years.
Sold them all when I moved to another country. Now all my 1911s are Norincos.:( But they are Ok guns.
May 14, 2011, 04:31 AM
Bought mine a couple years back. Rock Island for really cheap around here something like 300 new. 1911 is one of the guns ive always wanted and needed to own since i was a kid.
May 14, 2011, 10:51 AM
Option 7 : "never has,never will" :)
May 14, 2011, 02:17 PM
1911 hasn't entered my collection yet.
But I'd be surprised if I don't have one by the end of 2011.
Expense is the biggest issue.
Most 1911s are just too expensive.
And I'm leery of the less costly ones.
I've been hemming & hawing about the American Classic II.
The reviews all sound good, but my question is, why is it less than $500?
If you look at Kimber, Ruger, S&W, Colt etc...
they're all in the $800-$1500 range.
May 14, 2011, 02:25 PM
Not really certain where it came chronologically, but it wasn't first. That was a Ruger KP90 because it was .45ACP, it was stainless, DA/SA and it was $500.
I finally got a RIA Tactical because I've always wanted a 1911. Everybody needs to own a 1911 and a .357 wheelgun.
So far I've been VERY pleased with the RIA.
May 14, 2011, 02:54 PM
Nov. 30th, 2010. Yes, I've kept track. :)
May 14, 2011, 06:19 PM
This is tough. I had a 1911 30 years ago, couldn't get used to it, and sold it. A year or so ago I started shooting a friends Colt Government. It grew on me so much I bought a Springer TRP a few weeks ago. The bummer is that I'm currently recouping from bypass surgery and the surgeon hasn't cleared me for shooting yet.
May 15, 2011, 12:22 AM
I bought a new MK IV Series 70 Government Model in the Spring of 1974. How in the (expletive deleted) am I supposed to remember how many guns I had before that? Good grief, wait to you get over 60 and try to remember stuff like this. (LOL)
May 15, 2011, 02:15 PM
The very first handgun I ever bought was a Colt Series 70 5" 45 ACP Blue Government Model back in 1982 soon after getting out of the Army. While in the Army I was at times issued a 1911 and surprised myself at how well I shot it. I've never been without a Colt 1911 since then although unfortunately I no longer own that first one. I foolishly sold it to finance something I no longer remember what.
May 15, 2011, 11:04 PM
It was the first pistol I ever used, courtesy of Uncle Sam.
As a direct result, I still do not own one and have no sense of urgency about getting one.
Maybe at about number 20 or 30..
May 16, 2011, 04:22 PM
I bought my first 1911 for a birthday present for my self on my 21st birthday. Though i did own 3 other handguns before that. (My dad was so cool.)
May 18, 2011, 07:16 PM
...was a SA 1911A1 GI .45.
Since then I've had a mixture of autos and wheel guns, but I'd have to say the 1911 is my favorite platform. Now my collection is limited to mostly 1911's and a couple Glocks.
In addition to the Springfield:
Colt Lightweight Officers model
1942 Colt M1911A1 all original
1918 Colt M1911 - kind of a WWII Arsenal Frankenstein, but the best shooter in the bunch. It ain't pretty, but it eats everything I feed it and begs for more.
None of them are safe queens.
"Blessed are those who, in the face of death, think only about the front sight." - Jeff Cooper
May 18, 2011, 11:13 PM
Yesterday! The new/old Colt Officers Model that followed me home...
May 22, 2011, 06:28 AM
My fourth and sixth pistols were 1911's. That was back in 1980 or so. I haven't owned one since. My friend's have a bunch of them, way too expensive for mostly unreliable guns. Pretty though.
May 22, 2011, 06:24 PM
I have never owned one, and will never own one. I have however shot them since 1977, but only if it's your gun and your ammo, won't waste my money on one.
May 22, 2011, 09:57 PM
Well my 2nd hand gun was a Colt 45 GM that my Dad had bought for me. and the first handgun that I bought which would be third or fourth was a Colt Series 70 38 Super.
January 9, 2012, 03:01 AM
wasn't my first gun, but by the time I got around to getting my carry license, I had rented about every pistol at The Manchester Firing line, in NH, and they have a loooooottttta guns for rent :) had also shot many different friends guns by then too. I went 'window shopping' for a 1911 while waiting for my license in the mail, and it was love at first sight. I had it paid for before my license showed up, and brought it home the very day it arrived! My collection has grown much since then, but it is still my favorite handgun (and I LOVE my 4"629 and 6" gp-100). So though it wasn't my first pistol, it was the first pistol I ever purchased in a store. Next one I'd like to get is the Cimarron '1918' in polished blue, but I think I need to move to a better US State before I can legally own one. (Evil State safety-approved list :banghead:)
edit: just now seeing this is an old thread. found it searching for info on the cimarron...
January 9, 2012, 03:05 AM
Carried one in the military, got into Cowboy shooting for many years then decided to get a SD weapon and always trusted a 1911. Got a Rock Island, Love it!!
January 9, 2012, 03:43 AM
The 1911 entered my collection late. I was fixated with the polymer wonder guns(still am). I bought several glocks, xd's, ruger sr's, and kel tecs before I entered the 1911 world. To be honest I bought mine last year on a whim because of the 100th ann. I wanted a sig sauer and a 1911. So I killed two birds with one stone and bought the sig sauer c3 1911.
January 9, 2012, 08:14 AM
I bought an STI Spartan 1911 as my 3rd pistol, and then sold it not too long afterwards to get my 4th (non-1911) pistol. It was a very accurate, high quality target type pistol... I just don't really have a use for an expensive-to-feed range gun. Someday, I'll probably pick up an RIA 1911 tactical, American Classic 1911, or some other similar carry oriented value 1911.
January 9, 2012, 04:15 PM
October 25th, 2009 .... and it was a Kimber Tactical Entry II. This was the first semi-auto I'd bought in 14 years or so. I bought a .22LR ERMA in '88 followed by a Ruger P90 in '92, a SIG P220 in '93 and a SIG P225 in '95 (still have the SIGs). I decided that I should own a 1911 after watching American Rifleman in July of 2009. They featured the 1911 since the centennial was just around the corner. I credit the Kimber for getting me back into pistol shooting and the 1911 platform for getting me interested in competitive pistol shooting. I've purchased quite a few semi-automatic pistols since the Kimber but the majority have been 1911s. 1911s purchased after the Kimber TEII ... in order:
Ed Brown Special Forces Carry
Ed Brown Special Forces
Dan Wesson Valor
Dan Wesson V-Bob
Kimber Stainless Pro Raptor II
Ed Brown Special Forces Light Rail
I shot a Colt 1911 back in '88 but wasn't that impressed. I was more interested in the CZs that were common at that time in my neck of the woods. Some things are an acquired taste I suppose ... like Brussel sprouts!!
January 10, 2012, 12:14 AM
Started off with CAS shooting so I had a brace of 1875 Clones, and a brace of Blackhawks. Then I got an XD45. A few years later a brace of GP100's, and a Rossi .357. Then that same year, last year as a matter of fact (feels funny saying that but it's correct), I got the 1911 and on New Year's Eve I picked up a Stoeger Cougar.
So Currently I have the 1911, 1 GP100, and the Cougar. The 1911 was my 9th handgun but before I ever turned 21 I said that I would own a 1911 and now I do.
January 10, 2012, 01:24 AM
I don't have one yet. The first handgun I ever shot was a Colt 1911, probably a bit more than 30 years ago. I recently shot one to qualify for my CCW permit and have been wanting one since. I have picked up a couple of handguns since then but no 1911. Unless something unforseen presents itself, I expect a 1911 will be my next purchase (after the 22/45 I am picking up later this week.)
January 10, 2012, 01:26 AM
My 3rd handgun back in the 80s. I was so proud, It was gorgeous. All stainless, match-type trigger, I loved my new.....AMT Govt. model. A wonderful idea that never worked right, even after a trip back to AMT. Sold it finally, with full disclosure in favor of a Colt Mark IV. Then, not too long after, I bought a Colt Delta Elite. So my 3rd 4th and 5th handguns were all 1911s. And I wasn't done then.;)
January 10, 2012, 01:32 AM
Just picked one up last Friday, its my 18th gun. The problem with 1911's is they are terribly expensive, and the GI models just dont do it for most people
January 10, 2012, 01:49 AM
I walked into a gunshop with my heart set on a .357 lever action, I think it was a Puma or Rossi? We haggeled awhile and in the end I was just to stubborn over 15 bux and walked away. I went to another gunshop because I had heard about them from several people and ended up spending $150 more with no arguement from me.
I bought a safari arms 1911 and it has become one of my favorites, I later found a marlin lever gun and it's become my favorite rifle. It seems if your patient it all works out in the end.......sometimes:)
January 10, 2012, 03:12 PM
I have always wanted one but have likewise always been caliber centric (I have tons of 9mm and about a dozen corresponding handguns and did not want to start collecting different cals mostly due to monetary constraints--I must add, however, that I am also a huge Shotgun guy and have lots of 12g paraphernalia). Yet the 100Th Anniversary of JMB's Gem made it irresistible so I made the plunge and now own a 1911 as well as a .45ACP carbine to boot.
-Happy New Year
January 10, 2012, 03:51 PM
1st (and will be the last). There is NO Plastic in my collection!
January 10, 2012, 07:01 PM
A long time ago my first 1911 was my fifth handgun. After that it took a while to get myself another, but during last few years I've been buying them like candy. Two Colts, three Para-Ordnances and two Norincos last year, as a personal celebration of 100 years of the gun. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but that's nothing out of the ordinary.
January 11, 2012, 12:11 AM
I knew I wanted a Colt in my collection, so I went with it first.
January 12, 2012, 12:52 PM
Purchased my first after commissioning as a 2ndLt USMC. A 2ndLt with a 45; those were dangerous times.:)
January 12, 2012, 01:22 PM
my gold cup was "purchased" from my father about 5 years ago. he purchased it new about the time i was born (used it for bullseye competition). so, i have been around it most of my life.
i shot it for the first time at age 10 (kicked like a mule(some things you NEVER forget)). later on, he used it for javelina hunts (185gn XTP handloads) and informal family shooting contests (he always won!).
i take it out occasionally, but is now semi-retired.
January 12, 2012, 06:38 PM
December 31st 2011. Springfield loaded, or week late I picked up a Springfield EMP.
January 12, 2012, 06:41 PM
1911 was my first and favourite gun. Colt Officer's ACP all standard for a while and served as my carry gun until i got a Glock 23 and then later i switched to an Ed Brown Kobra Carry.
