I am considering adding a RRA Varmint to my battery of rifles. Does anyone have some velocity data that shows the difference between the 2 barrel lengths? I have the 16" mid-length already and really like it.

Thanks, Oscarcat

I do not have the velocity data you are inquiring about...

I did read an article back in 2006, that compared RRA, DPMS, Colt, and Bushmaster concerning their varmint set ups. The article suggested sticking with the 20 inch barrels. Also, the RRA w/20" barrel came out on top of the stack in terms of accuracy.

After reading this article my friend went to purchase the RRA, contacted RRA's, and they told him how the 20" would be the best choice.

Once again, I don't have the numbers you're looking for, just got excited when I saw RRA, and 20" barrel. I don't have personal experience with this one, but from what I've read, I think you're on the right track!

I have a 20" and 24" only difference is weight and optics. Both are very accurate but if you are going to add a bi-pod, scope, and have to carry the thing at all I would do the 20"............. Both of mine are very accurate out to 325 Yards and maybe further depending on ammo. hahahah Range only has 325 yard lane but think some of our ballistic guys will say out past a certain distance the 20 or 24 will not matter. The best IMO is get a good optic and barreled AR that is capable of shooting good groups. Oh just saw it was a .308!! Have not had the pleasure of using a 20 or 24 in that caliber.

I wouldn't get a 26" barrel on any 308 unless it was for a dedicated 1000yard rig, in which case it would be a bolt action.

Thanks Sky, This one would be for long range shooting. I plan on a Leupold 4x14 on top and a Harris bi-pod on the bottom. I'm just trying get velocity comparisons between the two lengths.

word on the net is 40-50 fps per inch loss or gained for .308. hope that helps.
