I finally made use of my C&R and UPS came today.

:D :D :D It feels like Christmas morning use to be when I was a little kid!!
I got a shooters grade and an excellent grade and honestly don't know which is which. One did come with the little leather pouch that has what looks like a cleaning kit in it. The other one didn't have it, so maybe that's difference? Other than that, they both seem fine to me and if I could order them over again I would just get to shooter grades and save $20.
What's the best way to clean all the cosmoline off? This stuff is caked on. I could barely pull back the action on the rifles and they slid foreward very slow when released. The cold probably has something to do with that since they just came in from the below freezing temperatures. I'm hoping once they warm up in the house a little I'll just be able to start wiping the stuff off.
Also, how do you unfold the bayonet? Do I just need to pull harder? I put alot of force on it but don't want to all the sudden hear something break and find out later that there's a hidden button somewhere I'm suppose to push.

Did you buy from one of the online stores? Would you share info about the purchase?

The bayonet has a latch up at its attachment point. Pull it towards the tip of the bayo and pull the blade down. It'll snap into place when the blade it fully forward, and you'll have to repeat the process to close it.
(Does that make sense?)

$199.90 total price for both including shipping.

It almost looks like you have to take the cleaning rod out before it'll open. I'm going to wait until I get the cosmoline all off before I start messing with that.

Our local dealer uses the cheapest K Mart brake cleaner - use it outdoors, protect you eyes and skin, don't expect to wear those clothes again (get a paper painters coverall to save the clothes).
The bayonet latch looks like the grip of the bayonet.

Yes, the bayo latch is the entire knurled grip of the bayo.
With the bayo stored, and you holding the rifle like you're going to shoot it, pull the entire bayonet grip twoard you like you're racking a shotgun. It'll move about 1/4" and then will be able to drop down and will be free to swing 180 deg, to lock on the grenade launcher muzzle attachment.
When it's deployed and you want to stow it, reverse the process, grab the bayonet grip, push it forward and it will be free to swing down.
If you look at the little "half-moon" rocker that the bayonet is mounted on, you'll see where the tips of the half-moon lock into the notch on the bayonet.

This is what works for me when removing cosmo...
Take it completly apart. Clean the stock and all metal parts with mineral spirits.(Paint department of any hardware store.) If you are not going to take the firing pin assembly apart AT LEAST soak it in mineral spirits for a while and clean it as best as you can.(I highly recomend taking it apart and cleaning it as cosmo gummed-up firing pins is one of main reasons SKSs slamfire.)
When you have the stock as clean as you can get it with the mineral spirits and the MINERAL SPIRITS HAVE EVAPORATED, wrap the stock and handguard in tin-foil and bake them in the oven at 175 degrees for an hour. (This WILL stink up your kitchen for a little while but it will go away!)When you take them out let them cool, and wipe the down with mineral spirits again.
At this point I would wipe the stock down with a good lemon furniture oil.
The gnurled collar on the bayo moves back and forth. That will allow the bayo to extend.
Damn, now I want another SKS!! Cursed C&R license!
BTW, those are a couple of beauties! Congrats!:)

Here is a good web site for info on C&R guns. It has step by step instructions on how to take apart your SKS (and many other C&R guns)

I used 2 cans of Gumout.
I broke everything down, metal in 1 bucket. Then held the stock over another bucket.
Sprayed down the metal parts, same for stock and reciever assembly.
Let soak for a couple hours, then wiped it down.It bled off cosmoline residue the next couple days, after the rifle warmed up at the range.A week later it was done bleeding of the cos concocktion.
Try this site for SKS info also,

The most important thing to remember here (for safety sake) is that when you shake the bolt, you've got to see and hear that firing pin freely rattling back and forth. Some of the bolt assemblies don't freely come apart. If yours won't, go for the long soak method.

Finally figured out the bayonet! Thanks for the info on that.
Thanks for those links too. I was wondering how the heck the grenade launcher worked. Does anyone know where you can buy those blank cartridges? Maybe you can launch potatoes or something with it! :)

I use WD40 to clean cosmo from my milsurps and also for the grease on the CMP bolt guns that I got.
In warmer months, the "stock in a black garbage bag" trick works to get that cosmo out of the wood, leaving it in the sun. This may work indoors also, with a nice sun room, or big bay window.
I have not gotten around to getting a Yugo SKS yet, but know one thing, I cannot get it form AIM, and most if not all mail order cos., since our Atty Gnrl has filed charges against many cos, to prevent mail order guns & ammo! AIM, Ammoman, etc. will Not ship to MA.
The Yugo SKS runs $170-$199 here in shops, yes for one.
(it would look good with my M48...)
