Just a random question for my fellow New Yorkers:

Is it legal to put a pistol grip on a manual shotgun so long as the overall length is within legal limits? The law mostly regards semi-automatic shotguns, which can't have more than two "assault" features like pistol grips or detachable magazines, but there's nothing that says you can't do that to a manual.

In this particular case the separate laws of NYC and the rest of the state don't appear to make a big difference. In NYC, owning the shotgun in the first place would require a permit/registration. Beyond that though the laws on pump shotguns are the same (as I understand the laws anyway).

To be an assault weapon and therefore illegal in NY state, the shotgun must be:
1. Semiautomatic
2. Manufactured after September 14, 1994
3. Has two or more of the following:
Telescoping or folding stock
Pistol grip
A fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds
An ability to accept a detachable magazine

You can put whatever you want on a non-semiautomatic shotgun.

Thanks for the help.

Couldn't help but notice you're from Ulster County. I'll be there Monday...

Yup pump shotguns are one of the few things the ban doesn't cover.
