Legacy .45?

My Dad bought the best guns he could afford and took care of them. They were good middle of the road production guns. A S&W model 67 and an early Ruger MK 1. He passed them down to me and my intent is to pass them down to my children. I have started adding to the collection by buying the best that I can afford. My first purchase was a Sig p226.

I would like to start saving for a .45 and would like to again buy a gun that will last both mine and my children's lifetimes. What .45 would you buy to fit this need? I would love a Les Baer, but my budget is probably closer to $1k
