Hey everyone, I'm currently stationed at camp pendleton (right near oceanside) and I could use some help finding an outdoor range, specifically to shoot tactical pistol at.

Any suggestions?

Honestly, I don't know much about what's down there (I'm up in Pasadena myself) but I'd call the Turners in Fountain Valley ( http://turners.com ) or try the CalGuns forum ( Http://calguns.net ).

Another place you might call is the Raahauge's Shooting Sports park ( http://www.raahauges.com/ ) they're in Corona (~60 miles from you) but they should know more about that area.

Thank you for your service and good luck.

Well I have only been to the one facility with an outdoor range and it was being used for skeet when I was there. I believe they allow handgun shooting at certain times, not sure though. This was Project P2K, 2082 Willow Glen Dr. in El Cajon CA 92019.Phone 619 442-9971 The indoor facilities were nice and they were very professional. Haven't been back due to the convenience of just dropping in at the American Shooting Center 5590 Ruffin Road San Diego CA 92123. phone 858 279 7233. They are an indoor range, max distance 25 yards, and they don't allow steel core ammo. Wolf and the like. But they are closer to me. One range I have been meaning to try out is the South Bay Rod and Gun Club at 1020 Marron Valley Road in Dulzura CA 91917. Phone 619 284-3770 Have heard they are an outdoor range with distances to 300 yards. Haven't been yet due to the distance. Closer to you is a range I have heard is nice but crowded, Iron Sights Shooting Range at 618 Airport Road in Oceanside CA 92054. 760 721-4388. I believe they are indoor and outdoor. Give each a call and ask about their facilities.

Well first thing is to check the range there on the base at Pendleton - there is one (I mean a range for individual use, not one of the several training ranges), though I don't recall the details of the facility. PhotonSD and Fractal have made good suggestions above - I may add to theirs.

Not sure what you are looking for, exactly, but assume you are looking to do more than punch paper in a static target lane.

Iron Sights is good, but indoor (they do have a friendly steels shoot each Thursday evening - check their website calendar at iron-sights.com).

Check out Raahaugue's (raahauges.com) in Corona - they have quite a few activities there, including what I think you would consider tactical pistol. Several bermed shooting bays. There's a great, informal steels shoot there several Sundays a month (see http://sites.google.com/site/ssaresults/home) called "Steel Madness", put on by the Shooting Sports Alliance. I go to these whenever I can - they are challenging and fun.

South Bay Rod and Gun has a nice outdoor handgun range, and they do some competitions, though I think only of the static/bullseye variety. Dulzura is also a haul for you from Pendleton - probably 90 minutes each way depending on I-5 traffic. They have a nice 300-yd rifle range as well.

I'd steer you to Raahauge's - lots of action shooting activities there, and not that far (just go east on the 76 to I-15 and up to Corona).

It may have changed since I was there 82 to 95, but I remember that you could schedule a req range with Range Control. They had some requirements like radio comm, hourly checks and picking up the range box from southern impact tower but that was pretty much it. I was with 2/9 at Mateo and they had a BZO range south of the river bed we used for req fire. As long as MCT wasn't training in that area it was pretty much open upon request. We used to check a radio out from comm (PRC77 back then) and drop it off with the OOD when we were done.
