Police: Two Men Break Into Home; One Makes It Out Alive
Homeowner Fatally Shoots Suspect

POSTED: 5:33 p.m. EST January 24, 2003
UPDATED: 7:17 p.m. EST January 24, 2003

CINCINNATI -- Two people forced their way into a local home Friday, and only one made it out alive.

WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Brian Hamrick reported that what police called a random home invasion in Walnut Hills ended with the death of one of the suspects. Michael Harris, 22, of Bond Hill, was shot to death, apparently by the man who lived in the town home on Auburn View Drive, near Sinton Avenue, according to police.

Hours after the shooting, details remained sketchy, Hamrick reported at about 5 p.m. Friday.

"We have one person shot and deceased," Cincinnati police spokesman Lt. Kurt Byrd said. "Right now, we're looking at it as a possible home invasion of that residence."

Byrd didn't have much more information than that, but Hamrick reported that a short struggle took place inside the home, a gun went off and the second suspect fled the scene. He remains at large. No description of him is available.

Byrd did confirm that there's no reason to believe that the homewner, Corey Simley, was a target, Hamrick reported.

"There are no indications whatsoever that there's any known connection, or even that they know each other," Byrd said.

Police questioned Simley, but are not expected to charge him, Hamrick reported. One of Simley's neighbors said that she was shocked when she heard what happened on the otherwise quiet street.

"I've lived here 20 years, and nothing like this has ever happened here before," Gina Walton said.

TV reports barely scratch the surface of news events. Maybe a more comprehensive print report will soon be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, :neener:

A Golf Manor man was shot and killed Friday morning after he and another man apparently tried to break into a Walnut Hills townhouse, Cincinnati police said.

Michael Harris, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The shooting may have been the result of an attempted home invasion robbery where the occupant was defending himself," Cincinnati Police Lt. Kurt Byrd said. No charges have been filed. District 4 officers and firefighters responded to the townhome in the 900 block of Auburn View Drive about 8:19 a.m.

Mr. Harris was found inside the townhome, Lt. Byrd said. He was armed with a weapon, which was recovered. Police would not say what kind of weapon it was.

The occupant of the residence was identified as Corey Simley, 29.

"He was defending himself," Lt. Byrd said. "He gave an indication that they apparently forced their way into his residence as he was leaving."

No other details of the shooting were released.

Police are looking for an accomplice. That man is black, was dressed in all-black clothing and was last seen running toward Sinton Avenue.

Mr. Harris was Cincinnati's fourth homicide of the year.

The attractive, tidy complex consists of several buildings, each containing two multistory townhomes. About two dozen cars were in the complex parking lot as police officers worked Friday morning, but residents would not comment as they hustled to their vehicles and drove away.

The neighborhood is just off of Gilbert Avenue near Eden Park.

Gina Walton, who lives across the street from the complex, was stunned to find yellow police tape when she came home for lunch shortly after noon.

The 20-year resident knows the neighbors on either side of her single-family house, but doesn't know anyone in the condominium complex.

"Nothing ever happens like this," Ms. Walton said. "We don't have a lot of violence on this street. It's pretty quiet on this street."

I'd call it taking out the garbage. The Brady Bunch will call it a child killed by gun violence. Why has there been NO follow-up in the local press on this story?
