I'm going to be going on a backpacking trip sometime soon, and i was wondering where i can find 20 gauge slug and buck.

I'd prefer to have brenneke type slugs, and OO buck if at all possible.

the weapon i'm going to take along is my H&R topper 20 gauge, which will have a newly shortened (20 inch) barrel by the time the trip rolls around.

probably the most dangerous creature in the area is man, but there are other critters that are capable of doing injury to a fellow up there as well.

Rem / Win and Fed don't seem to have 00 buck for a 20.
The largest is Federal's 18 pellet #2.

The Rottweil Brenekke in 20 gauge is an awesome performer on deer sized game. In a light single like a Topper, recoil will be sonewhere between bad and nasty. Use good form and a top line recoil pad if you want to shoot more than one or two shots.

#3 buck is common fo the 20, #2 can be found once in a while. Again, recoil will be stiff.

A few 7/8 oz field loads in 7 1/2 and 6 shot should go along too. Have fun...

Used to shoot coyotes with 20 ga. Smaller shot like #3 or #4 buck always worked better out of full or turkey chokes.

Have not seen #00 in 20 gauge since maybe the late `70s.

Brenneke makes a 3" magnum 1oz slug in 20 gauge. I've gotten very good performance with these out of my Mossberg 500 with 26" smooth bbl and modified choke.

Though the recoil from that little topper is going to be.....noticable.

thanks for the help. the local walmart didn't seem to have any 20 gauge buck, which means i'll probably have to order it, and i can get the slugs at the same time.

the stock is a tad short for me as is (since it was shortened to fit me when i was 9 or 10), so a thick recoil pad is probably in order.

can you guys reccommend any thicker than average recoil pads?

IIRC, Kickeez makes their top line pad in one model that's 1.4".

And all the shooting supply places like Brownell's will sell you spacers that go between the pad and wood to add a bit of length. These come in 1/8 and 1/4" thicknesses.

These are a little heavier than standard, so the muzzle light feel of these singles will be aggravated, but it'll work if you focus on keeping a swing going.

HTH....
