ok, i say need, not entirely true, im just ready for a new one. I go through handguns like my girlfriend goes through purses. I am posting this thread in search for a new pistol, i have been through several and am still not satisfied.
I started out with a PA-63 Makarov, then moved to a H and K usp 40(which is the favorite out of this whole group), then i went to a Springfield XDM 9mm and now i have a S&W M&P 40.. And i am still not happy. dont get me wrong all of them have been excellent firearms, i cant complain about a single one but, i just havent found the rite one. i am looking at the sig 226. i want a 9mm full size autoloader, that is basically my criteria. One day i will have a 1911 but i want another 9mm first, so...any suggestions?

PS. no offense but i will NOT own a glock, nothing personal guys

So get a 1911 in 9mm. You can find them in all different 1911 sizes.

Glock or CZ?

Agree. Get a 1911 in 9mm. I got a Kimber Pro Carry in 9mm a few months ago and now I hate all my other handguns. Infact just bought a beretta PX4 in 40sw and it can't hold a candle to the kimber. 1911 is the way to go!

with all due respect my 1911 will be in .45 acp, no exceptions, and i absolutely despise a glock, no offense to a soul out there, i know they are good weapons, but i will not own a glock, i have shot a few of them so dont think i have no reason to not like them, its just not me. but i have been thinking about cz.

I saw that CDNN had some S&W all steels for $299, I think they where on the bottom right hand of a page. CZ 75B's are also a croud favorite along with the BHPs.
I am not into combat plastic but I do own a FNP 9, its the only one I have kept, and I have tried most of them.

You know you want a 1911 in .45. This year is the 100 year anniversary of it. Now is the time. 9 mm can wait.

Also, you KNOW you want a 1911, but are not sure about the 9, and still want to go with the 9? That doesn't make sense.

OK, though, I recommend a Hi-power. Doesn't have to be Browning. Mine is a Charles Daly, and was only $350 a year or so ago at Cabelas. Shoots like a champ. Some believe it is the superior design to the 1911. I think it is, but that .45 is the superior caliber.

I think that once you go single action only, you won't want to go back. I think you can get CZ's and HK's in SA variants, right?

The problem with CZ's is that the slide is hard to grab, since so little of it protrudes outside of the frame. Not a deal-breaker for many, but you should definitely try that aspect before you buy.

The problem with HK's is that they're expensive and plastic. There's nothing wrong with plastic's performance, but it just doesn't have that Real Gun Feel, IMO.

To be fair, some don't like the magazine disconnect safety of the Hi-Power. I don't mind it, as the trigger pull is still the crisp single action.

I also agree with a 9mm 1911. I have a DW Pointman 9, it is my favorite range pistol.

Second choice would be a CZ 75 SA.

If you want something different, try a revolver. They're fun too.
I have both systems and it depends on the day which one to shoot.

My suggestion is that you PM me and I will pay for shipping and FFL transfers so you can get rid of those unsatisfying pistols.

OP:

You said "PA-63 Makarov" above; it's a Feg. Have you ever shot a Makarov, though, an actual Makarov? They're easy shooting and will never fail you. I know it's not a 9MM but it hits like a stout .38 SPL, so it's not a popgun. If Ruger or S&W made it & sold today, rather than the Russians back when, it'd probably cost $500-$600 or more.

I mentioned it because I got the impression that you were looking for "the" great pistol. I think Maks are.

wow, thats alot of input, thanks for the suggestions, i am kind of leaning towards either the usp 9 or the 226. woad yurt- i apologize for the misunderstanding, you are correct. i wasnt a big fan, i am a pretty big guy with big hands, not a fan. honestly. jim 21599- i have a revolver and shoot it excellently, i apologize, i meant to explain i want a combat autoloader. the problem i have with the 1911 is i just want one to have one. the .45 is too expensive to go to the range and blow off 2 or 3 hundred rounds. I definetely want a good 9mm. thank you for all of the input

I am really liking the 4.25" smith m&p 9mm I just got, hands down fits me better than glock, 92f is just to fat for my hand, but the 1911 is, well a 1911, there hasn't been much better built.

This problem can only be resolved by drastic measure.......it will either make you or broke you. I would think hand-assembled and precisely fitted piece is the thicket here therefore I recommend HSP-701.

.... Ahh yes, this was once my motto too... no longer though.

If you're not ready for the kool-aid, I doubt you could do much better than a cz platform, they are wonderfully accurate and reliable. I have the 75 B, but would probably recommend the lighter p-01 variant, or possibly the p-07. Good luck with whatever you get... we'll be waiting with a tall glass of kool-aid whenever you come around ;) .

I have a Sig Sauer P229 -- slightly smaller than the 226, but still fits my big hands just fine. If it were JUST a range gun, I'd get the 226, but I carry it on the farm, so the smaller one is perfect for me. I also have the .22LR slide, so .... lots of cheap plinking/varmit shooting as well.

You'll love it -- a totally different animal than either a 1911 OR a DAO ("safe action") Glock/XDM. I simply love the DA/SA with a decocker -- unlike with a Glock/XDM, I NEVER pull the trigger unless I am shooting. I can decock/reholster or take it apart without pulling the trigger, a GIANT advantage in my book.

I love the long first pull and VERY short/light reset. Subsequent pulls are light and crisp, and you can manually cock for the first shot if you wish. The gun eats Wal-Mart White Box ammo for lunch (loads of it -- perfectly), and I use Winchester PDX-1 for defensive ammo. I also have the night sights, but rarely shoot in low light.

Call me old fashioned, but I LOVE the Sig Sauer P229.

Find a range that rents guns and shoot whatever catches your fancy before you buy.

Any firearm is too personal of a choice to rely on advice.

I had a Sig P229 in 9mm and it was a great pistol but I ended up trading it in for a Glock. The only bad thing is the expensive magazines. You can't go wrong with a Sig.

If I were looking for a 9mm. I would start with the Browning Hi-Power. Great feel to it and seems to be a good fit for most everyone. The CZ 75 or P-01 would be my next choice in a 9mm. mainly because of it's innovative design with the slide running inside the frame. Also the shape of its grip closely resembles that of the Hi-Power.

The SIG P226 or P229 would be another decent handling gun to try, though I never really cared much for the DA/SA trigger design. I would also have to say the same thing about the Beretta Model 92. The Taurus PT-92 might be another way to go though if you prefer the feel of the Beretta, as the Taurus has a combination safety/decocker which allows you to choose between DA or SA for your first shot.

Just my .02, but I was a CZ guy for many years, then on a whim I got a Taurus 1911 in 9mm. I dont get excited easily about hand guns but this one is awesome. 1500 rounds in 2 months without a hitch and the price was reasonable. YMMV

Gotta ask the standard questions before I give the standard answers.

What are you going to use the gun for? Home defense/range only/gun games/ CCW mixture???? Do you have a price range?
What type of trigger are you looking for? DA/SA, DAO Hammer, DAO striker, SA only w/manual safety or a combo gun like a CZ75B?
Do you have large hands or smaller hands?
If you let us know more about your criteria then we can offer better more meaningful comments.

All that said my default if you do not already have one is the Browning Hi power. The orginal wonder 9mm.

But I really like my Springfield XD9, the ones I've owned have been very accurate and I've owned 2 besides the one I now Have and an XD40 as well. If you like combat tupperware and the 1911, they have basically the same grip angle.

im goin with the 226, i have decided. now i just have to try one, and in reply to the earlier question, i prefer da/sa, i have big hands, i want a pistol for ccw/personal defense, and a 500 to 600 dollar price range. i am gonna find a used 226. i have decided, if that dont do it i will go from there. thank you very much for all of your input

Sig 226 or Glock 17 for me. Have carried both for many years and have always been extremely satisfied. Never a failure of any kind. You can't go wrong with most of the high quality 9s these days. Shoot as many as you can and pick what feels right.

Siggggg.... I have a glock, M&P, USP, and my Sig 229 is probably the most luxurious gun I've shot (mine's a .357Sig though.... I got into reloading because of this caliber)... Everything about the gun is smooth, and perfect. My buddy says holding his 226 is like "...giving his hand a hug," and I would have to agree.

The 229 and the 226 are essentially the same except one is a 5" and the other is a 4" other than that.... I don't think you can go wrong with either a 229 or a 226...

I recently switched my carry gun too. I had a CZ P07 Duty, then went back to a compact .45. I began to miss my high-cap 9mm and a more shootable pistol that
was still easily concealed. After lots of deliberation, I purchased an FNP-9. I prefer a SA auto. The FNP-9 can be carried cocked and locked, or as a DA auto like a SIG 226. After a couple hundred rounds, I give the FNP-9 high marks. It is accurate, reliable, and a versatile design. I like the modular grip, which I choose the flat panel insert. It gave me a shorter length of draw for DA shooting. The FNP-9 gives me an accurate and reliable pistol, with high capacity in 9mm. It is dimensionally a fairly compact pistol compared to some other 9mm servise pistols. It comes with 3 stainless steel mags also. The only thing I don't care much for, is the tendancy for the mags to stick and not drop free when empty. I suspect that will improve after firing more rounds through it. Give it some consideration. I intend to stick with my FNP-9 as my go to CCW pistol for a long time. Good luck!
