I have a Savage M116 WW in 223 with a 3x9 scope. I bought it to hunt Coyote with.My friend has 150 acres that he leases to some deer hunter every fall, and during deer season when they field dress a deer they take the organs to a place near a fence row and dump them out. My friend asked if I would like to come to his place and shoot a coyote. Well with that in mind I walked from the spot I would be hiding to the fence It was 286 steps. Now I had an Idea of the distance I had to come up with a bullet and load.I wanted a bullet that was tough Not a thin jacket for small animals I also didn't want a FMJ or a HP. My rifle has a 1/9" twist and doesn't like 69 or 70 gr bullets. I asked around and went on the web I found that there were good reviews about Sierra 65gr SPBT.I ordered a box and some Varget powder after about a month I had a good load it would shoot a 3 shot clover leaf at 100 yards. Today I went to my friends place and asked him if I could put something at the fence row where the Coyote would be.He told me it would be ok.I just wanted to get a sense of how my rifle would do at that range. All I could find was a spray can of paint.I took the 4 wheeler drove to the fence line and placed the can up against a fence post then drove back.At the house there is a corral and I used it to steady my weapon. My scope was set 1 1/2" high at 100 yards I knew the bullet would drop more than that at 286 yards.I ask my friend if he would watch through my field glasses and watch were I hit.The 1st shot was low in front, the 2nd shot was a little to the left, the 3rd shot took out the can. We drove down to the fence row and looked at the can.The bullet struck the can about 1" from the bottom. I feel confident I can hit the Coyote when the time comes this fall.

Bullet-Sierra 65gr SPBT Powder Varget 26.5gr Brass Win Primer CCI SR AOL 2.260" It works well in my rifle but it may not work in your weapon.

Another bullet you might consider is the Sierra 63 grain Spire Point. My 223 is a 1:9 twist too and is pretty finicky about what bullet it will shoot accurately. The 63 grainer is superbly accurate in my gun. Varget or H4895 are both excellent powders for this bullet. Good luck with the coyote.
