Apparently it worked well against Rifle and Revolver, even though we do see some through-holes, which I assume, must have hurt.

He was finally brought down by assorted Gunfire to his Legs, and, was also struck by a Shotgun Blast as he fell, some of which injured his hip, where he was then disarmed, and arrested.

there's a alternate history book about robots called ''Boiler Plate'' that looks like it might have been inspired, at least in part, by Ned Kelly's armor.

In an issue of Jonah Hex a few years ago, he went up against a guy named Boilerplate Pete. He shot him in the face through the eyeslits.
