I've read alot about people carrying 1 or 2 knives with their gun. What is the reasoning? Jeff

It's considered ill-mannered to shoot open boxes and letters :D

I can't imagine going anywhere without a knife (or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5) in my pocket(s). I've owned and carried knives ever since I was 4 years old. The first knife I got at 4 was one of those pot metal things that came in a plastic bubble out of a $.25 machine.

One of my first memories is that of being in the backseat of mom's old Plymouth on the way home after buying that knife, and sawing at my arm with it while she was driving and telling me if I cut myself she'd get rid of the thing.

48 years later, I'm sitting here with one gun within arms reach, and no less than 28 knives :D (oops - make that 29 - I just noticed the Rappala I'm planning on sharpeniing).

That and it's priceless to see the looks at Applebee's or Outback you get sawing a big old steak with an Benchmade AFCK :D

I carry a fixed blade for defense, an Emerson Super-Commander also for defense, and a Benchmade AFCK for utility\backup. These are in addition to either Glock 23's or Sig P220's. I feel that the blade is an integral part of a complete self-defence package.

My everyday knife lives to cut boxes and threads. I have another knife that exists for when a gun is too dangerous to use (very crowded places).

Either of these will work well in conjunction with the handgun. You'll find that anyone's desire to try to take your gun away goes away when you have a knife in your other hand.

What is the reasoning?

The reasoning I believe is that a knife may be better at the job of self defense in certain situations...let's say someone comes up from behind and grabs you around the waist trapping the gun you carry, you both fall on your right sides on the ground. If you carry your knife on the right side you have no weapon to fight off the attacker, if you also have a knife on your left side you can POP it open and get to work! Same goes if you fall such or are in a hold such you can not reach your pants knives, if you have one around your neck you may be able to retrieve that one to defend yourself.

Reckon the ideal situation is to have a knife on all parts of your body to allow access no matter what position you find yourself in. I think that if you have more than one on each ankle, one in each of your four pants pockets, and one around your neck it could be considered a little overkill.

I almost always have a knife carried weakside. The reason is that in close, I still have my strong (well stronger anyway :() arm free for avoidence/defense and the weakside knife for offense.

Because sometimes you might have one hand full when you need a knife in the other.
My crystal ball doesn't work so well so I can never tell when which side is up to bat next. I carry one on each side. Quite often.

In spite of what some folks think a handgun is not a magic talisman that protects you from attack under all circumstances. That being the case a knife may serve in aiding retention or act as primary defensive tool employable when getting the handgun into use isn't possible. A person trained in basic H2H and in the basic defensive use of a knife can defend themselves better than a person only trained in handgun use alone. Then there's all the utility applications already mentioned.

I may carry two because IME my Karambit is ill-suited towards utility purposes and I don't like having to sharpen my defensive blade all the time. I'll carry my Leatherperson on me for the utility blade.

I don't carry two defensive blades....my pepper spray goes on the weak side.

For most of the reasons stated above and... I just like 'em.
